can anyone help me i have a rem 700 vtr 308 1 12 twist and i am loading a nos 125 bt blis tip with win 748 51.5 grn and my primers are cratering and flating out but my grops are good at 100 1/2 to 1" i now thats not great but its good for me im trying to lear myself and allso my grops are horable out at 300 yrd any help is grantly aprechated i willing to change my bullet and powder alltogether im trying to find a good allround bullet for varmits to deer to bench thankyou very much

duck, your at the very top with that load according to Quick Load. Drop back to 48.7 grns and shoot a round robin going up in .3 grn increments at 200 yards. You should find something acceptable.

Good luck, Jon

Id try a sierra 155gr mk, with varget, imr 4064, or imr4895. In that order. Im running 47grs of varget right now with a 155. make sure you work your way up to 47 if thats the route you wanna try. 47 gr's is flattening my primer, cratering i think is a function of sloppy firing pin hole? Ive had good accuracy with ballistic tips but I was shooting 150gr bullets.

also, something to try is try loading with bullets touching or .002 off of the lands then back off from there a little at a time. I always found that to affect accuracy the most, assuming i was doing everything else okay.

good luck

That, my friend is a pretty hot load. The old Winchester data says that 52 gr of 748 is maximum and that is still using the old CUP pressure and I've been a little cautious on CUP numbers.

To me, IMR 4895 has been pretty much the powder for lighter bullets in a .308, and it's always given excellent accuracy. 48.0 to 51.5 gr and as always start low and edge your way up.

I've got a 700P in .308 and it craters the primers (leaves a raised ridge around the firing pin strike indentation) pretty much from the mildest loads. Just a symptom of the bolt being drilled a little overly large for the firing pin diamter. So I keep a careful eye on primer flattening and case head expansion.

IMO you'll see better accuracy with a stick powder like IMR 4895, or 4064. They just don't meter as easily as ball powder out of a measure and should be weighed.
