new to the forum world qesstion about 308 win in a rem 700 vtr 1 12" twist

The 168 SMK is the best target bullet (On average) The 308 will shoot most any of the 30cal bullets well. You may have to play around with a few to see what yours likes. Varget is the powder of choice for most 308s.

155 or 168 AMAX will give you accuracy, penetration and splatter on varmints.
My 12 twist LTR shot the 178 very well.

thank you for the info is it inportant to have real high valocity and maxing out the load i have been loading 125 nos bt with 51.5 gra of 748 and my primers are cratering and i seem to only get good groops out to 200 yrd and i get one or two flyers thanks again for givng your time to help me chris

i have a 308 LTR and mine shoots 175 smk by fed and its shooting less than 3/8 of an inch all day long.

For a hunting bullet I'd try the Hornady 165 SBT. That bullet has performed well and accounted for several deer and hogs for me.

Good shooting, Jim

No, it's not important to have real high velocity, and it's better if you don't max out your load; better brass life and prevents over pressure on a really hot day.

What you want is a consistently accurate load, one that shoots good all the time, even if it's not the best shooting load of them all, but the most consistent.

Also, if you are going to be shooting long range, try the heavier bullets, like the 155 or 168 A-Max, they shoot great and are economical, also the A-Max is a good hunting bullet.

I don't know how far you are planning to shoot, but for best all around bullet I would probably go with a 168 gr. class bullet.

Hope that helps!

The 125 Nos BT will do just fine as a combo Var/Deer/Bench bullet. as mentioned MAX is not always best. In no particular order good powders are VV 135 , VV 140 ,Win 748, IMR 4895, IMR 4064, IMR 3031, H-335, Varget, Benchmark, oooh and 8208 XBR is looking good so far also.

I have a vtr in 308 that loves 45.5 gr of rl-15 behind an 168 berger vld hunting bullet. it shoots 2700fps to 2715fps. it is one of my favorite deer hunting loads.
