New(to me)6x47 Lapua

693F915A-F597-471D-B9A2-8C66B1F91305.jpeg So I would like to thank a couple of our members for helping me to build my new steel/hunting rifle. It is a Remington 700 SA Stainless with a modified Brux #4 fluted finished @23”. It is residing in a Grayboe Renegade with new Grayboe M5 DBM. It’s wearing a new to me Nightforce NXS 8-32x56 MOAR in badger rings. I hope to go shoot it this weekend for break-in and some load development. Thanks again guys.

That's a really nice setup, particularly for field use. Definitely keep us posted on how it shoots!

8 twist I believe. I have 100 pieces of new brass that I necked down and loaded this past weekend 107 sierras and 105 hybrids with rl16. Will see how it does.

I did not on these, but after loading these and measuring, its apparent that I will have to at least turn .001" off making it .002" off total. then I'll have about .004" neck clearance. I may have to go to a smaller busking though. I'm using a .268" now. I have an .267" available which will give me about .002" neck tension( rough guesstimate, because I don't have any way to measure it).

Measure the neck diameter before and after you seat the bullet. The difference is your neck tension.

I had to turn my necks as well on my 6x47

I put together a 6X47L about ten years ago... one of the early adopters I suppose.

Started doing load development in an Ontario January well below freezing.

Hang fires drove me crazy, velocities were everywhere.

After trying about 5 powders and as many primers, I spoke with David Tubbs about the problem.

His advice was to form cases from large primer brass, so I did and never looked back.

Velocities became so consistent that I had to turn my chronograph off and on between shots because it kept running the same speed.

It shot like a dream for almost exactly 800 rounds then fell apart. It was a Polygonal barrel though... probably why.... accuracy was great barrel life was short.

But the lesson was learned... and my advice to you 6x47 fans, try forming brass from 6XC cases at least to prove to yourself if I'm correct... and I am correct.

To save money you can form cases from 243 brass using a 2 step process... Cut the 243 sizing die short and push the shoulder down, then run it through a 6x47 die to change the shoulder angle.

I formed some cases from 22-250 brass in one step but the side wall collapsed and they needed a light load to blow the cases back out.

As for necks, I turned them as well and made it a habit to test the loaded rounds with a Redding sizing die bushing 0.002 smaller than the chamber.

If it didn't fit, the case needed work.

What is the difference between forming large primer brass and drilling out the primer hole in Lapua brass?

My bad, I thought Practical was referring to flash hole. Looking at it again I see he meant primer size. Must be my allergy has my head clogged!
