New to F-Class / Forum

As this is my first post I would like to thank all the people that make this forum up to date and accurate (for the most part). That being said I am new to F-Class and got hooked on long range shooting a couple months ago hitting dish plate silhouette targets at 400 yards with a 7mm Rem Mag (hunting rifle).

I have been hand loading my 7mm for years and only that 1 caliber. I love the idea of hitting X's at 600-1000 yards with a precision time rifle.

I am looking at the Savage f/tr .308

I currently run a Millet 8x24x56 scope but looking at the Sightron SIII 10x50x60

I will worry about hand loads once I have the platform ready to shoot.

Is this a good path to go down? better options? (as a beginner) Thanks for the feedback!!

Clint

Welcome to shooting fclass and the forum fellow. I hope you like supporting a habit because this stuff will work on your wallet alittle. Ha. I will let the 308 shooters line you out on equipment.

you have selected a good rifle and a good scope to start out.

May I suggest looking around here in the classified for a used f-tr rifle. And maybe you get some load info that way it can cut down on load development time and get you shooting matches faster.

Also you have not address the bipod you wish to use

--There are sled-foot type bipod's (Centershot,MPOD,Phoenix, Sinclair, and many more)
--For a pre-loading bipod the only I know about is the FLEX bipod

But other than that welcome and good luck with the addiction of LR shooting

Clint, welcome to the forum, I was typing something similar to what eric posted, and in the middle had a power failure due to weather. Savage will do the job, your making good choices.

I just wanted to clarify what Mike was saying. This "Hobby" will not wear "a little" on your wallet, it will grind it to powder! LOL!!!!

Benjamin, I haven't seen a hearse pulling a trailer yet!! Might as well go shooting!! Clint, going from a 7 mag to a 308 is going to be a change of pace. You will find fclass a rewarding experience and easy to fall into, good luck to you.

Thanks for the welcome and the posts! I can't wait for the spring time to come so i can get out and test out some equipment. Thanks for all the great feed back.

The bi-pod at the start will be a harris bi pod off my hunting gun until I find something that fits my style.

Thanks!

Clint, My advice is to hook up if possible or at least correspond with good shooters in your discipline. I do not shoot FTR so I won't give you any lame advise, other than the best FTR shooter day in and out is probably James Croft. Talk to him and do what he does or suggests. It will save you a lot of money.

Clint,
Not sure where you live, but here is a link to a list of known matches throughout the country.

As to the Savage FTR, I shot one and found it to be a very accurate rifle, right out of the box. If you buy one, make sure to pay attention to how you adjust the trigger, though. If you adjust it too light the trigger will lockup when you close the bolt. This is a safety feature. I found mine worked best around 10 ozs.
The only reason I do not shoot it still is I decided to build a custom rifle.

As far as bipods, I use the Sinclair Tactical bipod. I used the Sinclair Gen II, but moved away from it. It's a personal choice. Others have their choices. Go to a match and look around at what others have. After the match talk to the folks. They can be a wealth of information and speed up the learning curve.

Take your time, listen, learn and enjoy the journey.
