New stock troubles .......

I put a short action Savage with a custom barrel into A Boyd's Thumbhole laminate I've been working on...Long story short...It was causing trouble with the trigger.SOOO..Swapped it back into the fiberglass stock & it just wont shoot anymore...one high, then one low.. shifting back & forth...I double checked the action & scope screws ...I can't figure this out...This 22-250 has been a real headache so I guess the fun will just go on & on...I have another barrel for that action in 243 winchester I'm going to swap it on to that fiberglass stock To make sure my scope is still good...Shifting point of impact like that is bedding trouble or a bad scope...Can anyone give some advice on these troubles ???..mike in ct

Did it have the custom barrel when it was in the fiberglass stock or was it added after? If it was added after, you wouldn't expect it to shoot the same in the old stock. -Rod-

no mini torque wrench here dave...I got to go by feel...Having troubles with the rem action 6mmbr also..Gave it a good cleaning..The action screw was loose so I tightened that up [just past snug no more]...It wants to throw lead around also..in both cases but not to the same degree...one high left then low & shifts back to high...ughhhh...I'm going to pillar bed that old stock if I get the time...the 6br gun sets in a 40 to 50 yr old 40X wood stock...it has nice black glass bedding no cracks Should not be an issue but it is...The custom 22-250 barrel has been troublsome but nothing like this last two trips out to range...Really bad this go around back in the stock it started life on...I think I should send both out But I'm a toolshed gunsmith nitwit...so I'll tinker somemore..right now only the new 20 caliber is worth going hunting with..& I'm leary of new stuff till it has been with me on a couple of varmint safaris..I'm not feeling motivated to drive all the way down to Pa with any of my rifles...mike in ct

Mike,

Two thoughts. First check to see if the barrel channel is truly free-floating. I have one rifle that has complete clearance when sitting in the safe. But when you put the gun on a front rest, if the contact point is too far out towards the tip of the forearm, the bbl can touch the wood. So, I move the rest further in towards the action.

The second idea is check the inletting where the base of the action sits. With my Savage stock I had to use a dowel wrapped with sandpaper to countour that to better match the action. I also contoured the pillars. I know some guys, like Richard Franklin) prefer straight pillars, with bedding material built up on the sides. But, I was able to reduce random flyers by getting a better fit of action to inletting.

The rear of the Savage action should also be free-floating.

Check your crown too.

will do mr moderator...thank-you...I'll get motivated & do some fussing with those stocks..next week...to the range...!!! I'll make it work...mike

dave..I have those hex head screws & a longer than normal [say 5 inch long] allen wrench the correct size....This less than a quarter turn past snug sound about right for torque values?...I'm thinking I have over tightened the front action screw on the savage...maybe both are too tight on the Rem action 6br gun...I'm going to take them both apart & reassemble trying to keep things equal..Is that a better plan ?? mike

The other thing that helps with a Savage is, after you've tightened the action screw snug, but NOT tight), hold the rifle by the barrel and give the buttstock a couple mild raps on the floor. This will help seat the recoil lug. Then proceed to tighten fore and aft screws. I set mine pretty much as tight as I can get with a 3.5" allen wrench. But work front/back, front/back etc. in sequence so the bolts are snugged the same amount each time.

Send me a PM if you want good Savage action screws. They might stick out a bit more on the trigger guard, but they are harder and not the soft POS that Savage gives ya.

Savage and Remington Action screws are the same size and thread btw.

I can get ya close and you file down to a perfect fit.

RHINOUT!

we are getting somewhere now....I like the snug, knock the butt stock then tighten it routine..no chance to shoot this week guys..It will be next week at least before I get back to the range for another test drive...I really appreciate all your comments..thank you all ...mike
