New Sightrons are here

Rick, please let us know what rings you used to get the proper hight to clear the 60mm obj bell. I have one on order from Larry, I'm sure it should be coming soon. I'll be setting the rings on top of 20moa Badger Ordnance bass.

Will do. I ordered the extra high Burris Signature Zee rings for it. For comparison, I believe I have a set of the same in high, sitting around here too. I tend to like my scopes higher so I can see thru them easier.

Well, she's here. It was dark when I got home to see it, so, no optical comparison tonight. The rifle is a Barnard action with Barnard tapered base. Barrel is 1.250".

Side by side with a Nightforce 12-42x NXS I had layin' around

The two sets of Burris Sig. Zee rings I used for comparison. The taller is extra high, I'm not sure if the shorter is medium or high.

Extra high rings. About 9mm of clearance.

Switchbarrel i hope you got to compare them two. waiting to here the difference

I set the two scopes up on a table today, about 3" apart from each other so I could bounce back and forth between them. I aimed them at a rooftop about 100-110 yards away - which was the furthest thing I could see from my court. I realize this is completely unscientific and totally subjective. I didn't have color charts or eye charts to focus on at distance. I had concrete roof tile striations and a bird crap to look at. Just my observations, nothing more.

I knew the Sightron didn't come with a sunshade, the Nightforce does. The Sightron doesn't come with any lens caps, which I think is a glaring omission - The Nightforce does. The Nightforce costs an extra $8-900 bucks, I get that. I'd rather spend an extra $10 on the Sightron and have it come with some kind of lens protection. I'm lazy so it'll probably take me a year to figure out what I want and then get lens covers. Personally, not a fan of the Butler Creek flip caps, (I've got 'em but, they reduce eye relief) trying to figure out the right size(s) is sometimes confusing.

If they weren't side by side, I wouldn't have been able to tell any difference between the two. I set them at 12x, 30x, 42x and then bumped the Sightron to 50x. Clarity appeared to be about the same to me, I couldn't tell a difference. The Sightron seemed as though I was looking through a larger diameter tube compared to the Nightforce. So, the Sightron seemed like it might have been ever so slightly brighter - again, not noticeable if they weren't side by side. The Sightron was a little more critical of head position but did have a little more eye relief, it was still easier to get into position to see through the Nightforce.

I haven't weighed them yet, but the Sightron is listed at about 4oz. lighter. Which, as in my case, if you're trying to make weight on a "light-gun" could be of importance. The Nightforce has a proven track record, the Sightron has yet to prove itself.

With similar pricing, what might be a difficult decision would be a LNIB Nightforce BR model with a reticle you prefer vs. a brand new Sightron with limited reticle selection.

I'm happy with my purchase, actual range time will tell if it was a good one.

FWIW- It's was interesting to me, if you think about looking through a hunting scope at 1x and another at 8x, the image difference is night and day. Looking through the NXS at 42x and the SIII at 50x, it really only seemed like the image was a foot or two closer...

I just received my 10-50X today. I've snapped a couple of pictures...comparing a new 8-32X SIII to the 10-50X. From my low light overcast skies...the 10-50X seemed identical to the 8-32.

P.S.

Clicking on the picture brings up the album. The smaller scope is the 8-32X by 56mm SIII.

Wayne did you find the 10 x 50 to be as usable at 50x as the other is at 32x in terms of clarity, brightness and eye positioning?

I haven't mounted the 10-50X on the rifle yet...nor the 8-32X for that matter. But at 50X...it was a little more touchy with head position...than the 8-32x...in my non-professional opinion. But it didn't appear to be something a guy can easily compensate for.

I thought the clarity of the 10-50X was ever so slightly better than the 8-32X and even my NF 8-32X BR scope. I felt that brightness and color rendition were pretty much equal...between the two SIII's and my BR NightForce. Perhaps they have the same supplier of glass and / or coatings?
