is this scope any good?

i am looking into buying a new scope, and this one cought my eye. it is the Millett Tactical Long Range LRS Rifle Scope 35mm Tube 6-25x 56mm Side Focus Mil-DotBar. i was just wondering what you guys think. most people like them but i just thought id ask and see. ???
here is the link to Midway USA,

Fellow at the Manatee Rifle Range here in South Florida has two of them on his 6BR and his 260 Rem. Both are heavy target rifles for 600 and 1,000 yards. He wanted to sell me one of the rifles and I looked through it.

It looked the same as a Millet 30MM 6-25 I have on a 25-06. Fair.

I say fair because it does look good but to me the clarity and definition, especially at the highest power, is just not as nice as my new Nightforce, Leupold or even Burris models. Of course the Millet is dramatically less money.

From a mechanical standpoint mine adjusts fine. The tiny screws that re-calibrate the adjustment graduations seemed like they would strip out easily so I don't use them.

Decent scope. That fellow that has two just keeps claiming they are great because they were designed for the 50BMG, or so he says.

yeah i just cant afford a nightforce, although thats the scope i really want. leupold is also out of my price range as well.

so as far as mechanically working they are ok? just dont use the readjustment screw on the top of the turrets?

what about tracking and holding zero, does it do its job in those departments?

My experience is with one Millett scope only, mounted on a .30-06 hunting rifle. The clarity was okay but it couldn't stand up to the recoil. Something sprung loose inside and it wouldn't hold POI after a couple hunting seasons. Based on that, I would save my money for a higher quality scope.

well what about this one. its a Vortex Viper 6.5-20x 50mm side focus mildot.

The Vipers are very good scopes. I have three for hunting rigs and they are well made. Not NF quality, but in my experience, a good bit more rugged and better glass than the Millett scopes.

The Vortex Viper PST series looks like they are finally about to be released and I will purchase at least one. Vortex is a great company and their CS, if ever needed, is top shelf. You would sleep good at night using a Vortex Viper in my experience.

They are not a NF, but the glass is very good for the price and all of mine have tracked perfectly with a lot turret spinning dialing dope. Personally I would skip the mildot and use a ballistic program as you will need to be a specific power range for the holdovers to work properly and then there is always the questions about ranging properly without a laser rangfinder. If you are at the range, you know the distance so the mildot is really not required or needed. YMMV

Sightron SIII are very nice, but they are also a fair bit more money. If this is for bench/F-Class shooting only, I would agree with you, and if the cost was not prohibitive.

yeah guys i can only afford to spend about 450 to 500 bucks max. are there any other fairly good scopes out there with good target turrets, and good reliability

You may want to take a look at and consider this scope

http://www.natchezss.com/product.cfm?contentID=productDetail&brand=WE&prodID=WE94540&prodTitle=Nitrex TR Two 4-20X50mm Rifle Scope Matte Finish TrexPlex Reticle

Think this model retailed for around $670 before being discontinued. Now you can get it for $250 with the $100 rebate on it. Shipping on it kinda high...around $17. Heck of a buy, darn good glass and it has side focus and pull up turrets that function like target turrets. Nitrex TR2s are basically Weaver Super Slam scopes.

I thought they were sold out of those. Right now that scope is the best deal going. Those are really nice scopes especially for that money.

I would say the Fullfield II 6.5-20X is the best deal going right now for $250 at SWFA. Amazing deal.

(Has hunter knobs though, not target...could be a deal breaker)

For $450 to $500 you could get a really good used Leupold, and with the forever unlimited warranty, no matter who owns the scope, I would not hesitate. The 6.5-20x with target knobs is one of my favorites.

There are two scopes on benchrest central that might interest you. One is a burris 6-24x50 fine cross hair, but says with a 1/2 moa dot. usually most scopes have only a 1/4 dot of even a 1/8 moa dot. This scope is priced at $375.00. The other is a Bushnell 6500 elite 4.5-30x50 mil dot for $600.00. These are great scopes but have been bringing only 500-550 used.

Mal,

I Have a 6x24x50 4200 mildot bushnell tactical that you would love.
Great turrets , side focus , not Heavy or long. very clear glass.
My personal favourite for the money. $495 Shipped.

I Also Have a 4.5x30x50 6500 milldot bushnell tactical. Same as above,
but $585 Shipped.

Trying to fund a new project, nothing wrong with scopes at all.

I Have a fishing guide buisness so i have a credit card machine if that helps.

thanks,
