New Shooters..Giving good Pit Service

i've only got to shoot at place that has pit once (the others you shoot your spotters they mark them then you just shoot your string at once) they put me with a person who had done it before and we each had a specific task before the shot i felt the wood he looked at the back burm. worked good we never had a complaint one problem i ran into the shooter having his bullets in a pile and counting his shots (he thought he was on 14 and i had him at 15) when i go to the line i take 2 boxes 1 for sighters 1 for record with the exact amount in them so there is no doubt.

Here is a new twist..... I travel 1500 miles to shoot a match spend an over absorbant amount of money only to get squaded with the one local club shooter who has NEVER shot a match in his entire life but wanted to give it a try. On the State Championship no less. Did not know how to score the shooter or pull and mark the target. Lucky me. On a real tricky windy day when I needed to shoot fast when I could.
I go out of my way to help a new shooter no matter what. But that might not have been the best venue to shoot give it a try. Guy was completly clue less that he had effected the other shooters score. Luckly it was fixed right after the first realy and we worked around it.
Then at one of the largest regionals in the country I had some bad service from a nice fella that has been doing this for a very very long time. I didnt say anything and just left it go until two days later I was next to him in the pit and noticed why my service was slow. He was standing back by the bench for every shot and that takes 4 seconds from the time the bullet passes through the target and into the berm before it even pulls it down. Hard to give 5 to 7 second pit service when your standing around 3' back waiting for the bullet strike. I could shoot... Eject the shell, load a new one and then look in the scope to wait for the target to just go down. I happen to say something after I had saw what he was doing. It was quite after that and I hurt his feelings i believe. two days later we squaded next to each other and he was doing what he was supposed to be doing so maybe it helped some one else.
Hate to be an Arse about this but common people. I have seen 75 year old women pull faster than some.
Gee wizz.
Sorry for the rant, had to get this one back to the top.

As a brand new F class shooter having never shot any type of highpower I was taught by a friend how to give good pit service. The ones I always see that can't give good pit service are the old farts with nothing better to do but bullshit in the pits and waist time. The new guys were I get to shoot are all trying to do the right thing and get the job done so they can go shoot as well as trying to not be a disappointment.

I agree with everything said. Slow pit service sucks and there is no reason for scoring mistakes. If you can carry your gear to the line and navigate to the range, you have the brains and brawn required to pull targets and keep score.

But...BUT!!!...before you rant and rave and criticize your fellow shooter, make certain you are in the right. And when you are wrong, be adult enough to admit it. I have witnessed National Champions lose count of rounds fired, score the wrong target, cross fire and deny it etc. We are all human. We all make mistakes and errors.

And learn how to pull targets quickly, accurately, and with respect for the shooter, regardless if they are your buddy, the club jerk, a HM or the new shooter or even Russ. ;D

See ya at Memphis, Russ.
