new scope

hopefully you folks can help with my decision i have purchased a stevens .223 and now i need a scope, basically this gun will be for just varmint shooting at distances not yet known but what kind of reticle would you guys suggest. i would like a scope with mil-dots but it seems the only thing i think i can afford so far is a duplex which will work i just really like the mil-dots. also i know you folks will not like this but i will just have to deal with it. i am really budgeted so i need a scope for under 200 preferably 150, but i might be able to swing 200.
any suggestions will be great, thanks.

Try looking at www.swfa.com look under vortex crossfire for a while they had a 6-24x50 mildot scope for right around 100 dollars plus shipping if not try looking at all the scopes on the site you might find something you like. Hope this helps

I'm in the same boat (kinda) I'm moving my 4x16 42 AO off my hunting 308 over to a varminter 223 and been looking for a 200+ range scope for the 308. I found this interesting;
http://www.opticsthoughts.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=29:qinexpensive-scopeq-comparison&catid=4:rifle-scope-reviews&Itemid=4

Swinging heavily towards a Vortex DiamondBack with their Dead Hold BDC.

Bushnell is dropping their 3200 and 4200 models for a new one this year and they have DOA BDC and their on sale all over.
I guess I don't really want mil-dot again, I find them too busy for what I need, and most in the lower end are in the second focal plane and a only work at a fixed power anyway

But I would like a BDC of some type just for referance.
Good Luck with your search.

Anything with Busnell on the label is going to be decent for the $. I wouldn't get caught up in mil dot untill you get some yardage experience. Realistically, a 223 hits a wall at about 400 with varmint bullets , 77 grs bullets etc change this BUT you have to have a very fast twist to sabilize them, which I'm pretty sure your rifle doesn't have. Look at a reticle with a BDC etc or Ballistic plex. As stated, 3200 & 4200 models are discontinued & on sale everywhere. There are other good scopes but these are a value at the price they're being sold at.
Stay away from Chinese.

Actually, I like Chinese food and people.

As for Chinese-made scope, I had problems with my Vortex Crossfire. Had to send it back for service but is holding up so far.

I'm not disagreeing with you but my only thoughts are there are two types of scopes those that have failed and those that are going to fail.

i find going to gunbroker and looking for a Luepold, 6.5x20 has netted a good lifetime warented scope below list. if is has a problem when you get it send it to Lue and they fix it no charge,

works for me

i apologize i should have listed some of the other things i am looking for in this scope. i really like the side adjustment for the focus and also target turrets, i know that there are plenty of good reticles and the only reason i suppose i like the mil-dot is for the holdover indicators, now whether or not i am using it correctly it works for me. what do you folks think of Cabelas scopes like their tactical? also i was looking in their magazine and i saw some scopes called blackhawk, now even though they are out of my price range that is really what i am looking for something along those lines, if that helps.

thanks,
j

if you want a scope with side focus and target turrets for 200 or less, you won't be getting much of a scope. you should be looking through the scope for clarity and quality. buy nice or buy twice.
a buddy of mine bought a fixed 20 super sniper scope and thought it was okay for the money, but was really impressed how much clearer my leupold 6.5x20. that was a couple of years ago and i still have a nice scope with the leupold and he has since bought another scope that still doesn't compare to mine. good glass will last. cliffe

Natchez...Nitrex on special. a bit more than you want, but not bad. Learn to use the duplex as a range finder, then click up.

Personally I give thumbs down on their namebrand scopes, I have a couple Cabelas stores near enough to get to'm from time ta time, and you see alot of their scopes in the "Bargin Cave", that's the area for clearance and returns.(there's a reason they're there)
There's better out there for the money.

understood about cabelas, so if i were for now go with a bushnell i should be okay. I have the bushnell banner on my 22-250 it is a 6x18x50 i just don't like adjusting the objective
while shooting. but i think i will look around and see what i can find. Oh ya did i mention this is going on my new stevens .223 i ordered from walmart, i called around to 5 gun shops within 60miles of my house to try and get the best price 4 were more expensive by 50 or so $$ 1 told me that that gun was no longer made, i thought that was kinda odd being as i or anybody else can go to savages website and see the gun and get a list of dealers. anyhow thanks for the info i will let you all know what i get.

thanks

J, take a look a the Nikon Buckmaster 6 X18 X 40. It is a little over your budget at $309, but it has everything you are looking for. Side focus, target turrets and mil dots. The only place you can get this scope with the mil dots is Midway. I have one that was on my 22-250 which is now a 22BR, it works great.

Natches has a big sale close out on their Bushnell 3200 Elite right NOW!!! Go to the their web site and check them out they are almost 50% off. I just got their add yesterday.

When I first got a .223 Savage I put a 6-24X Tasco on it. I proceded to kill rock chuckd clear out past 500 yards. Since then I have purchased scopes that cost more than 20 times that much. But I have not killed any better or fired smaller groups. Therefore I would put a 6-24 Tasco Varmint/Target or World Class on it and never apologize.

When anybody finds a 6.5X20 Leupold for between $150.00-$200.00 I want to the the first to know beacuse I have never seen one go for under $400.00. and that would be one great deal at $400.00. USED

As far as BSA scopes go. Don't waste your money they are JUNK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! If you have one that works just wait a little while it won't. You can take that to the bank.
