scope suggestions

hey folks i have a stevens 200 in .223. i am wanting to get a new scope, but have not yet decided on what though. i really like the nikon coyote special but i do not like the circles would rather have dots or lines. i also need to stay under 350$ would also like side focus. i do not know what kind of magnification would be best i would like as much as possible but what are you alls thoughts?

You might want to try one of the Nikon 6x18 buckmaster scopes with the mil-dot reticle. I am fairly sure they can be found under 350.00.

might want to look at a Mueller scope, they really are a great lower entry scope for the money

look on Gunbroker.com and you may find a good luep at a reasonable price, they are lifetime warranty so no sweat.

Consider Nikon ProStaff or Buckmasters. Weaver Classic V or Grand Slam 3-10x40 Mil/Mil the MidwayUSA exclusive scope. The later is hard to beat. DO NOT get a scope that has moa adjustments with a mildot reticle. It makes zero sense.

i have a 2-10x classic weaver on one of my .223 and a Bushnell 4200 3-9x on the other. weaver purchased new was $159 and Bushnell in like new condition purchased here for $150. Both are plenty of scope for the. 223

Diddo.......love my Classic V scopes, 2-10x38. For all practical purposes, 2-10 will get the job done! Minimal money, minimal size and great glass.

no...not dumb at all. always better for Q&A before one spends $. sounds like you want to be practical. how long do you think most of your shots will be? do want a regular duplex reticle, bdc or something else? are you wanting to learn more with a mildot reticle with mil turrets? most people go overkill on optics. it can hinder their shooting skills and it's very unnecessary. my 223 can nail targets great at over 500 yds, BUT if I'm shooting am animal I want an ethical clean quick kill. depending on the size of the animal, most shots with my 223 are going to be made at a max of 350 yds for all practical purposes. so do you feel your need would be met by a power of 3-9, 2-10, 4.5-14, 4-16, etc???

BEWARE of large objective lense optics. one must mount them higher and many dont fit the shooter because the optic is generally not in line with the shooter's eye. dollar for dollar...weaver and nikon are tough to beat. most dealers like to sell the biggest latest and greatest optic. thats simply bs. my 3-9, 2-10 and 3-10 power scopes do everything I demand. let me know.

as to my statement about a mil/mil scope, thats simply referring to a scope that has a mildot reticle with mil turret adjustments. get mildot if you want to learn how to estimate range and make corrections with your turret adjustments for long distance shooting. its fun. a good old duplex reticle is hard to beat for general purpose shooting. whatever you do...DO NOT get a scope with a mildot reticle with .25 moa adjustments because mathematical conversions will be required.

checkout the Nikon ProStaff & Buckmaster scopes, Weaver Classic V & the Weaver Tactical Grand Slam 3-10x40mm mil/mil scope (a MidwayUSA exclusive scope) and don't skimp on mounts/rings either. if you want rings that don't need to be lapped, consider Burris Signature rings. I've seen good scopes that were difficult to zero because the owner didn't know about lapping rings. lapping is done to put the ring bores inline with each other.

I had a mil dot Buckmaster 6-18 and was very impressed with it.

I have since sold it and wished that I never did,i will get another soon.

based on the fact that it is a stevens 200, and he did not say what he was doing with the rifle, i think it is hard to pick a scope.

having said that, you guys think the leupold 36x bdr is too much on my 223 ??

(do not jump in with both feet...it is a dedicated BENCHREST rifle)

I have 2 Nikon mildot buckmaster 6-18x40 w/side focus scopes and one 4.5-14x40 Nikon buckmaster side focus, mildot scope on my varmint rigs. I have no issue w/moa turrents & the mildot reticle & knowing where they all shoot using the mils or dialing up. Most likely due to the fact I shoot every week at the range and have my actual dialups to 800 yards.
The 4.5-16 is $219 at natchez and its new.
The others run about $324 or so at midwayusa.
I have ZERO issues w/them out here in the snow/rain/mud cold etc.

Any time you need a scope contact Dan at Killoughshootingsports.com.

Cant beat em. Decide what you want and then check w/ Dan. If he dont have it, I suspect he will get it at better $$ than most. Dan and crew are shooters.
