new scope

Im in the market for a new scope it,s primary uses will be deer hunting and target shooting i want something with outstanding low light performance i have a nib 4.5-14-44 zeiss con with a mildot also a vx3 4.5-14-40 while using it last year had a big buck come out right at dark,i could clearly see him with my pentax binoculars but not in the scope i swore by this season to get a better scope maybe a nsx 5.5-22-56 or the new vx7 also considering a top of the zeiss or ph swaroski im either going to put it on a 6.5-284 or a rem ltr 308 thanks.

If you need more lowlight performance, look into the Zeiss Diavari line--very pricey, but favored by European hunters who often hunt at dusk or at night.

But keep in mind that higher power will produce smaller exit pupils, and zooms tend to appear darker as you increase the power.,Just like a 70-200 zoom camera lens may be f/4.0 at 70mm and f/8 at 200mm) What you want is a fairly big front objective, with lots of light gathering ability, combined with relatively modest magnification--say a 3-10X.

I suggest you talk to the folks at http://www.eurooptic.com/ . They are very experienced with the premium European optics including S&B, Zeiss, and Kahles.

Zeiss makes a V 3-12x56 illuminated Victory Diavari 30mm which should be a real light-gatherer.

From the Zeiss website re lowlight performance:

Twilight Performance

Using the following formulas gives a basic evaluation of low light performance; however, one must keep in mind that they are mathematical formulas and do not take into effect some of the most critical features in optics: glass quality, number of lenses, precision of manufacturing and coatings.

For excellent nighttime performance, I'd recommend a Schmidt & Bender 2.5-10x56 with a flash-dot reticle. I know it's just an illusion, but I feel I can see better through it in low light than I can without.

One thing I've learned that really helped is that you need to readjust the focus when it gets dark and you have to move it quite a lot. If I remember right, I had to go to something like -2 or -2.5 diopters or something like that. So, don't get any scope that doesn't have a fast focus.

And I'll add a second on calling Eurooptics. Great place to do business.
