We just bought a Leupold 6-18X40 MARK AR MOD-1 scope from Cabella's.
The scope was mounted on Mrs. Fyrewall's .204 R. The rifle, a Ruger Hawkeye .223 size, has a Richard's Frontier style cut down fore & aft to petite size. The barrel is a 8 year or 416 week, old McGowen, 11 twist, 22 inch, Ruger factory contour. Over 2200 rounds have been fired thru this barrel and it has been used on two different rifles and McGowen reinstalled it.
The steel target, known as "Mickey" was shot at 300 yards by Mrs. Fyrewall; the group measures 1.75 wide by 1 inch deep. The load was 29 grains H CFE223, Hornady 40 Vmax, Hornady brass & CCI 41 primers. It was windy. Necks just turned enough to clean up. Using this load with this barrel has shot small rodents at 400 plus - wait until they drop down from standing then shoot at the up wind edge. This is an ideal scope for small rodents (gophers/ground squirrels and prairie dogs) but for the incredibly tough for size western rockchuck the .22-.250 is a better choice for long range. The first day this barrel was used it killed about 60 prairie dogs, 1 gopher, 1 small rockchuck, & a small rattlesnake (10 feet with scope set at 6x). Low recoil, small powder charges, cheap bullets, flat trajectory, and long barrel life.
The scope elevation dial is set up for "223 Rem 55 3100FPS" Use with the .204 R load hits 1.5 high when the dial is set on "3" at 300. Scope clarity is outstanding. Slight fuzzy near edges of field when set at 18X, no big deal. Adjustments are positive. Mil dots will be used to coach Mrs. Fyrewall in the milliradian system. The scope might be used on her 6.5X47 Lapua.
Scope clarity & brightness is much superior to past Vortex scopes at same price. More brightness than 6.5-20X50 Burris.
Normal retail price $550, Cabello's sale price $350 a great buy.
