NEW SAVAGES FOR 2007

I think Savage missed the mark,big-time) on these:

F-TR:

Fore-arm is too short. Cheek-piece is just an afterthought. Rear stock has too much drop--should be straighter for a bag.

F-Open,one ugly mutha):

Just take the barreled action out of that goofy stock and put it in Fred Moreo's,SSS) new $299.00 laminated Tooley MBR clone.

The good news--the F-Open will be offered in 6.5-284 caliber, a good choice. Also, it is claimed the new "target" Accu-trigger can be adjusted as low as 6 ounces.

Yes, there's been much discussion of them on other boards.

Puke ugly.... and "cheap" looking.

One looks like a Boyd's varminter stock with a plastic choate cheek piece glued on it. And the other just shouts "Dayum..."

Savage had been doing a good job with the RBLP varminter, the low profile and standard laminate varminter...

They up-chucked these two.

And "Fred" doesn't make stocks... never has. He buys / orders them from his "vendor" once you place your order. Same with the SSS triggers, etc. except he usually has a few of those in stock.

Savage tries to make a rifle that can do all things for all people, like playing golf with one club .Is this the production gun or concept /option model ? Most stocks I get on new rifles are replaced in a year or less for looks or fit.

I never understood why they cant build a vertical pistol grip stock, wood or glass ) with adjustable cheek and butt plate for under $200 -150, where are the Chinese when we need them ?

Actually, Savage has in its inventory a BVSS-style laminated stock with a nice adjustable cheekpiece that they used on their "Competition" Model a few years back. For the life of me I cannot remember its nomenclature but seems there was a "Model J" or something in there.

Even the F-TR would be more suitable, in the opinion of someone who has never shot F-Class, with the standard BVSS stock.

Maybe some of you who have "contacts" at Savage could suggest they used the "competition" stock. Doesn't seem as though it would be incur any new tooling costs for them.

Also, I applaud Savage for these rifles. They have some shortcomings as we can all point out, but at least Savage is trying. These two rifles are a good step that just needs a little refining and some supportive input that might allow them to address some of the needs without having to market a $4,000 custom rifle. Who else is even making an attempt to supply factory equipment for serious shooting?

The 3" wide foreend on the "ugly mutha" stock is superb. Not sure how they came up with the butt design, though. Whoever makes the stocks for Savage could surely program their router to make a straight-bottom Tracker-style stock with far less design work than this thing has.

I think that if there is a company who is willing to bring out rifles that are this close to what is needed, then the competitive shooting community should support, suggest, and encourage. These Savages are on the cusp of being factory-built competition rifles, something that has been absent since the early days of Remington's involvement. Kudos to Savage!

I think this is the old competition rifle. Thats the same basic stock, without the mods )as my .308.

If that's the rifle I think it is, it's been heavily modified. The cheekpiece and buttplate are not stock, in particular. They are fairly simple implementations though, compared to more complicated, and expensive) versions.

I have to agree with you on all points. Savage is to be commended for bringing out new rifles that will appeal to a market that wants to get into the game without spending $4000.

I would be more impressed if Savage made a factory Palma rifle with adjustable buttplate and comb, Anschutz forearm rail, Picatinny rail with integral Redfield base, and a muzzle turned down to .75"

Just add sights and ammo.

Their courting of F class at the exclusion of Palma/conventional LR is weak. Contrary to popular belief, conventional prone is alive and well in many clubs and areas of the country. My club definitely fills up most of the firing points with sling shooters for our 3 X 600 matches.
