new Savage lrpv question

i get a new Savage LRPV 223 with a 7 twist, been hearing alot of good reports on shooters have excellent results with the Sierra 80 SMK's, i have tried a few different bullets so far and was hoping the 80 smk would group the best, actually the Hornady 80gr Amax with 24.5 Varget shoot the best, and i am on my last 100 pcs of Amax 80"s, they are discontinued, i went thru a box of 50 Sierras 80 smk's, tried Varget, H4895, RL-15 IMR 4320 most loads were touching lands, anything else to try going to get another box of 50 before i give up on them, i did try the Berger 80.5 they were good also, did not try the sierra 77 TMK yet. wonder if the Sierra 90 gr SMK are worth a try.

AMAX bullets have been replaced by ELD-M bullets. Identical but for a new polycarbonate tip reputed to be less likely to deform from heat. I used the 52-grain AMAX and now use the 52-grain ELD-M with equal accuracy with same loads.

I don't think the 80 gr ELD is the same as the AMAX. I noticed on the bottom of the ELD box that is states "7 Twist" barrels. The A Max didn't. I am pretty sure the BC is higher also. My new 8 twist barrel (.223) doesn't shoot them as good as the AMAX. I didn't discover the 7 twist thing until after I had shot a box or so of them. Just saying.

Possibly. I have only used the 52-grain AMAX/ELD-M. I based my opinion on a call to Hornady and my experience with the 52-grain bullets. Other weights may be different.

That seems to be a pretty heavy load of Varget with 80's. Aren't you crushing the powder when seating?

I use Berger 80's myself in a 7 twist Model 12. I have heard from others at my range that the Sierras are more accurate.

Good luck.

in a 7 twist

Don't be afraid to try the 90gr. SMK's. The only problem you may run into is not having enough throat or free bore. That can be fixed by a competent Gun Smith with a throating reamer. I shoot them with 24.0 grains of H-4895 and they work extremely well.

I second the regular smk. The tipped smk are more vld ish than there non tipped brothers. The shape is far less Sensitive to seating depth I went to these after the eldm. Initial testing is still occurring but it seems a lot better.
