new rifle

Hi. I'm looking at buying a new rifle and would like some extra input on the matter. The rifle will be mainly for prairie dogs, but other critters will be on the menu. Would like a factory gun, mainly so i can walk in and walk out with it) that has reasonable accuracy out to at least 500 yards. I'm think about a 22-250 in a Savage model 12 BTCSS,Varminter thumb hole). I've had a few people really talk up the savage and wanted to see if its true or if their just blown smoke.
So question #1: What do you think of Savage rifles.

I would like to stick to 22-250 because I already have the dies, plenty of brass, and other components for the caliber. I've been pleased with the results from my current Weatherby varmint master in 22-250. Easy to get reload supplies, no case forming, good speed,in my opinion), ok accuracy,at the range 300 yards 5 shots 1 1/2" to 2" groups most times).
Question #2: Is it ok to stick to the 22-250 or am I kidding myself and need to look at a different caliber.

If I end up sticking with the 22-250 I have one more question that has to do with barrel twist rates. My Weatherby with 1 in 14" twist in 26" barrel seems to like 55 gr. V-Max. The savage also has a 26" barrel but in 1 in 12" twist.
So question #3 is: Should the Savage prefer a heaver bullet with hopefully a better BC, or is this to little a difference to matter.

I appreciate your time and any comments you would like to leave.
Thanks, Hath:)

HATH -

Howdy !

I don't think you mentioned the common ranges you expect to PD shoot at ?

With the 1-12 twist, you may want to try Sierra .224" cal 65gr.
Polymer-tipped bullets ARE NOT your only option.

Savage rifles have a well-deserved rep for out-of-the-box accuracy. This rifle/bullet combo should be good for 500yd
kills.

Best of luck in your endeavors !

I use to have a 22-250 and loved it until the 204 Ruger came out.

The 22-250 is great and you'll be happy with it-but when you shoot the 204 you'll see what I mean.

I love the 20's so much that I'm having a 20 Var Targ made.

question #1 Savage has come along ways with there rifles in the last 10 years, but I think still do not compare to the Remington 700s. this is my own opinion only.

Question #2 the 22-250 can and will perform well at 500 yrds, a faster twist barrel and heavier bullet will help allot, but i have busted several coyotes and countless PDogs at 500 and further with a 55 grain BTHP. You might think about a 220 swift. good luck with search. Duke
