"NEW" Rifle...but used

Two weeks ago I bought a "NEW" rifle. A Remington 700 P in 223. The purpose was to shootmid range F TR with it. As soon as I got it I sent the bolt out to boltman for a flute job. Couple days later I started to clean up the new gun like I always do with a new gun. This barrel was so dirty I had to use Sweets and IS SO. Being frustrated with the lack of clean patches coming out I had a friend look at it with his borescope ... The gun "USED" !!!! It came directly from the dealer like this. A huge carbon ring and fire cracked most of the barrel!!! So yes I'm a little pissed. What to do ??? First I guess the dealer will hear about this tomorrow. Will see what they say. I'm guessing I'm stuck with it since sent bolt out already... my bad for not checking it out prior !! Hoping for a new barrel money from them. I doubt it though. Now I'll just have to make a full blown F TR out of it !! More money than I had originally planned to spend since I've never shoot F TR before. What are your thoughts on this ??
Thanks again
Rmist

I would see what the dealer says first, but sounds like someone (probably the dealer) took it for a test drive. Like on a prairie dog hunt. If the dealer does nothing , be sure to make everyone you talk to aware of their business practices.... .
Bad business practices are not to be excused.

Do you mind sharing the name of the vendor who sold you the rifle? Might suggest to him that his reputation is at stake and will be broadcast if he doesn't make good on the barrel. Just a thought.

The gun was sold as new !!! It came from Jerry's a wholesale distributor thru a FFL then to me.

Then you have a case against them - contact them in the morning - they did NOT have a good reputation here in Connecticut - and they closed.

Dunno how you will prove that YOU did not shoot the rifle (which is what the vendor will claim). It's gonna be your word against theirs.

Better chalk it up to experience gained and only buy from vendors you have researched and found to be reputable in the future.

There you have it. Looks like Jerry's has already been on the radar and has "history."

There is plenty you can do as long as you have the receipt that lists the gun as new.

I agree with JRS above, especially since you have a barrel with fire cracking and carbon ring. Pretty challenging for the seller to prove you did this to the barrel within two weeks of ownership and not having the bolt.

It would be impossible to get that much throat erosion and fire checking in such a short time, unless it was belt feed - I mean, it a friggin' 223, not a 257 Weatherby.

We don't know how much throat erosion it has. OP says it is firecracked "most of the barrel". How many times have you seen that?

Anyway, not my problem, but it will come down to "who you gonna believe". I hope it works out well. I think it will not.

The OP said that the borescope told the story that the barrel had fire-cracking throughout. I have never seen fire-cracking past about 6" of barrel. That statement prompted a thought. Several years ago I had a Remington "Police Special" (or some such language) that had a 20" HEAVILY fluted barrel in .308. It was a GREAT shooter. I always take all my rifles to my 'smith every 400-500 rounds or so and have him scope out the barrel. The barrel on my Remington, under the scope, APPEARED like it had terrible fire-cracking all the way down the barrel. However, my 'smith said the barrel looked "normal" for a factory rifle.. I asked why it looked like that. He said many "factory" barrels look like fire-cracking BUT it is just that they never REALLY lap the barrels and they take on that appearance. Maybe, I am not saying it is, but maybe this phenomenon has been mistaken for fire-cracking. Now the carbon ring>>>that is a different story altogether.

Might be an honest mistake. Give the dealer a chance to respond. --Jerry

I'm going to give them a chance. It's just strange to me that the gun looks new and the interior is not. The bolt and all outside surfaces look new!! Just not the barrel. It may be a Remington issue and not the distributor. Still aggravates me !!!

Jerrys hasnt closed, they still have 4 distribution points. LDS

They closed in my state - they were so badd, that the dealers got together and formed a cooperative to purchase stuff.

It is not a Remington issued gun like that.

It is possible that a Jerry's employee took it out for a while, and then "re-inventoried it", or a customer returned it after a week on dog towns.
