I've been reading this forum for over a year now but this is my first post. I am looking at building a long range hunting/semi target shooting rifle. What I have now is a Win M70 classic in 300 win that I had a muzzle break cut into. When the break was cut I think it messed up my barrel because in 3 years of experimenting with all kinds of hand loads I can not get this thing to group consitantly at even 200 yards. So I want to take my rifle and get it rebarreled, rechambered in 7mm/300wsm, action trued and magazine blocked. I have been reading a lot about the 7mm/300wsm and I think that I am pretty set on that caliber. I will be purchasing my own reamer from Pacific so that I can have another barrel built to the same specs after I shoot this one out.
My questions are this: What type of barrel would you recommend and why? I leaning towards a shilen or a broughton but not sure if there really is that much difference in quality. I want a 28 inch tube with a #4 taper so that I can pack this thing around Alaska this fall chasing caribou plus pack it around NW Montana where I live hunting elk. I don't want a 12 lb gun when I'm done.
Is it worth my time to try to make the M70 classic action into a shooter or are they just too much work?
Does anyone have any specifics on 7mm/300wsm round such as COAL, brass OAL, etc? I can't seem to find the specifics that people are using.
The smith I'm planning on using is Dennis Olson out of Plains MT. Some of the guys I work with have had him do some work for them and he has done good or so they say but they really are not that picky. Anyone ever use him or know anything about him?
Any ideas/feedback would be great. Thanks.
