new project

Hey guys, new to the boards and wanted to say hello and get some opinions for a project I have in mind. I have a LA Rem model 700 that I have been wanting to build up. I have had in mind the idea of a 6mmRem using a barrel block and a PacNor 26" barrel with 1-8" twist to shoot the 107g Sierra matchking. I want to be a ble to have it both ways in that I want to be able to hunt with it as well. This is why I was going with the 6mm Rem. From what I have been reading the .243 is a little hard on the barrel. Is this basically the same for the 6mm Rem? I am not tied to the action and I can go with a SA model and use the same barrel for 6mm 22-250 or 6mmBR, but, I have no idea as to whether this would be a good idea. Can the 1-8" barrel handle a Sierra Gameking 100g or is there such a thing as too much twist? Any help would be appreciated.

What length barrel would you consider going with the block? I am still in the planning phase right now so I can change anything right now. Also, am I correct in aaumming that the 6mm REm will be as hard on the barrel as the .243? If so, do you think the 6mm-22-.250 would be ok for hunting whitetail deer?

Hi i would look at the 6mm XC as it is designed as a cartrige that has good exterior ballistics and WILL FEED from a magazine instead of the 6mm-250 as this is what it is essentianaly but improved with a longer neck see articles on the XC and it should be the way for you to go and use a short action on the 8 twist and 100gr hunting bullets in 30 cal magnums 150gr hunting bullets are fired out of 10 twist barrels when they only need about 15 twist to stabalise them at that velocity so i would not worry as you would require at least a 10 twist and the remington 6mm rifles have a 9.25 twist as standard it should work well for you you can use the boat tail soft point 100gr 6mm hunting bullets knowing you will never have trouble stabalising them. They should be fine for white tail as it should be essentialy the same as a 243 in ballistics i would use a barrel about 25 to 26" long to get the performance. And if you wanted a Varmint load the 105gr A Max is pretty explosive because of the plastic tip and thin jacket. The XC is designed to function with long match bullets seated out and still work through the magazine that was the whoule idea of the cartrige.

Thanks for the input guys. I am still in limbo right now. I want to use the action I have and am thinking about the 6.5-.284Norma. Am I correct in my thinking that a Rem model 700 LA would be ideal for this caliber if loaded into a ADL with the heavier bullets mounted out as far as they should be with near max loads in a hunting mode. I have read where folks have trouble unloading a loaded round using this caliber. Also, can anyone give me OAL for a 6mm-.284. None of the manuals I have list this caliber, but they do list the 6.5-.284. Is it basically the same case for either caliber on this? I like the 6mm bullets for their less recoil and wind bucking. Thanks guys,

For the 6mm-284, check out this gun of the week: http://www.6mmbr.com/gunweek019.html

You can click a link in the first paragraph to communicate with John Southwick, whose gun was featured. He can give you OAL etc. But keep in mind the ideal OAL will depend on how the gun is throated. That's why we don't normally list OALs in the articles, but usually list seating depth relative to the lands. John runs 107 Sierras:

Loading for Accuracy
My match load consists of Norma 6.5-284 brass, 51.0gr RL-22, Fed 210m primers, and Sierra moly 107gr MKs, seated about .010-.015" into the lands. This runs about 3250 fps from the 28" tube. Case necks are turned to .0133" wall thickness for a .270" loaded neck diameter. I use a .268 or .269 bushing, and bump the shoulders back each time. I set the "bump" so that, with firing pin removed, I can just feel the case in the chamber when closing the bolt. My loaded rounds typically show no more than .0015" runout on a NECO concentricity gauge. I credit the low run-out in large part to the custom inline seating die and shoulder-bump neck-bushing die Jim made for me.

"Harder", you would be putting the same amount of powder through a smaller bore. It is the ratio of case capacity to bore diameter that is the main factor in how fast barrels wear, or more accurately, burn out, given similar rates of fire.

Thanks for all of the input guys. I think for the first project, I will go with the 6.5-.284 and on the next project I will go with the 6XC. I wanted to build a couple of rifles anyway and I think this wil give me the best of both worlds. I think the 6.5 142SMK will do very well for target shooting and the Barnes140XLC will be my hunting load for this rifle. I'll post more info when I get the project started and finished.
