6MM PROJECT

Hey guys i have a new 29' stainless krieger 1/8 twist 6mm barrel sitting in the corner and can't for the life of me make up my mind on what to chamber it for, i was really set on the 6mm improved but lack of quality brass and dies has got me a little worried, somebody please help me make up my mind

Sorry guys i should have put more info for intened use ect,
first of all 6mm is my pet cal, always has been, i grew up shooting my dads 788 in 6mm, so 243 is out of the ? i may as well sell my ford and buy a chevy, not gonna happen..
it's gonna be a all around gun from paper to coyotes to deer me and buddies shoot alot but mostly long range so speed is very important i perfer 105 bergers as they shoot great out of my current 6mm but shes about do for a rebarrel thus my delema..

6mm br is a great cartridge i just dont think it has the case cap to push the 105s as fast as i want, 243 ai is still slower and has a shorter neck, no thanks, sorry 243 fans but 6mm is better always has been!

ive really been going between 6mm ai & 6mm dasher i would like to push the 105s around 3200 to 3300 if possible

I made my 6mm Rem Ackley brass from RWS 7x57 parent brass. Mine is a 1:9 twist Hart and I am hammering 95 Bergers at 3475 fps and 107 SMK at 3300 fps. When the throat is gone, I'll set it back and start again. It just shoots too good to slow down. Sub-1' at 300 yds all day and it doesn't seem to care about the wind. tiny

243 Ackley, Lapua brass maybe 50-100 fps slower than the 6mm improved I can 3200 fps out of my 1 in 8 krieger at 26 inches long with the 105 Berger or 107 matchking! Redding has some great dies.

I went with the 243 ackley and love it!

Just my two cents

How about going the other way.
6 mm Br with a long throut it should be a tad easier on the barrel then when it washes you can go with one of the others if you like.
The 6br should be good for about 1200 to 1500 rds if taken care of it, with that length you could set back again.
Dies are standard BR pretty afforable.

Spook, I think you got it right. As much as I like my 6 Ackley, I will be going with the 6x47L on the next long range 6 build....... unless another lastest-greatest appears.

Doesn't it depend on what kind of shooting your going to do? Determine the task, pick the bullet, choose the cartridge. Easy, sort of).

MT300RUM,

I have had 3 6mmAI, they do fine with W/W brass, but I am going to build a 234AI for the next barrel on my Bat. It is a varmint gun, I can't make up my mine to go 10 tw or 8tw. I don't think you can tell much difference in velocity, between the 2 rounds.

I agree with HPMike800, but if you decide to go with the 6mm AI, I'm using Winchester 257 Roberts +P.
Geramo.

Out to 600 yds the br will do the trick.
a 271 no turn neck and the 105 gr bullet is excellent.
Of course if speed is your game and getting out there a tad more is what he needs then the ackeley 243.
100 ft per second is not a lot to worry about. Light bullets and slow powders are killers on barrels with an 8 twist. he'll need a 10 or or 12 for light bullets. and the lighter ones even a 14 twist. My bet would be the 6 br with the 105. the brass is easy enough to get and all he has to do is neck size the brass to start. He could get away with wilson dies and be ahead of the game. With the right load it is excellent from an accuracy stand point. Lapuas brass is right there too. the brass i have is has less then .0005 run out, right out of the box.
I have a dasher and the br is so close if i had to do it over it would be the 6 BR

You might call George Gardner at G.A. Precision and inquire about his 6mm Crusader. Supposedly it is a 6mm remmy blown out more than a ackley and can be fed in a mag. He is doing load development now and I think his biggest group measured in the six's. It will be my next prairie dog round. SPM
