New Project from an Ol' Savage Model 112 - 22.250

I've got an old, and when I say old, I mean old Savage model 112 in a 22-250. This rifle probably has about 10,000 rounds through it as it havs been to Montana and South Dakota numerous times and has killed more prairie dogs and woodchucks than you could shake a stick at. I would imagine that there is no rifling half way up the barrel, but still shoots pretty good. OK - so its time to rebarrel this old girl! I would like to stick with the 22-250 caliber because I'm cheap! I have about 700 rounds of loaded and unloaded pieces of brass for this single shot old rifle! So I was thinking about rebarreling it with a Krieger 1-8Tw. barrel. My question is - does anyone have any experience with the heavy weight bullets with their 22-250? I will be using primarily Hornady 75grain and 80 grain A-max bullets and also some 80 gr Bergers, since I have so many of these bullets. AND how accurately will the lighter match bullets shoot in this fast twist configuration ,55 - 69 grain bullets)? And what can I do for a better trigger??

I can help with the trigger anyway.
The Rifle Basix Sav 2 is pretty darn good for a do it yourself trigger. Advertised to go down to 4ozs. While it may be capable of dropping down to 4 ozs in reality they do not function well that low. Closing the bolt with anything other than a feather touch will trip the sear.
I have three RB II's. Each were set up on different actions by setting as low as possible without tripping the sear. Then my buddy bought a trigger quage and I tried it. All three broke at 7 ozs. Thats not bad at all.
I did need to stone the trigger body bracket of each trigger to get it to fit my actions. I actually liked that. A nice tight fit is better than a sloppy one size fits all.

I hear SharpShooterSupply has a new 2 oz trigger for Savs. It does require installation by them as well as timing and trueing of the action. They're very busy folks and the waiting period is notoriously long.

ALO -

I graduated from stock .22-250s to custom barrels chambered in my .224" wildcat 33 yr ago.

I neck .35 Rem brass down to .224" cal.

Shooting from a K & P 28" 5-groove SS barrel, I coud get 75"A"-Max gong 3,500fps; honest. The load was 75"A"-Max over 40.5gr AA3100 w/ FED LR Magnum Match primer.
For my accuracy load, i only had to sub the primer to FED LR Match.

The accuracy load had enough power to put 460ft lb of energy on a groundog; out to 966yd. That's good enough energy for a clean-kill.

Your .22-250 would hold less powder.

Best of luck in your endeavors.
