New Project .22BR

Need some advice from you.

My next project are a .22BR rifle for varmints.
I got Action = Remington left hand
I got Stock = Remington VS,HS-Precision)
I got Scope = Leupold LRT6,5-20x50
I got Rings&Base = Badger :D
I got Recoil lug = Hollands gunsmithing, mod. Pinned)
I will only use 40 and/or 50grs. V-max

Need advice on this:
Pac-Nor Super match SS, twist 1-14". Contour med Palma or Sendero maybe fluted.
But which kind of grooves 3 or 5 ??? Please advice
And how long barrel do i need to reach 3800-3900f/s for a .22BR Is it enough with 24" ??

I'am also going to buy my own reamer for this cal.
I have been looking at PT&G,Dave Kiff) but i'am only getting  on what i need......

Do i need to neck turn?,already neck turning my .6PPC)
I'am not able to make up my mind about this.... Maybe i should turn necks very little?
If so, what kind of reamer do i need?

Ohh Lapua brass of course......

This is a picture of my last project

reach 4000 fps, cold weather ) request a bit more than a 22 BR

I will go in 22/243 Midd, wich is a 22/243 with a 30° shoulder ) you can reach the velocity range of 4000 fps easy at mild pressure, case can be make with 243 WIN from Lapua .

go with 0.4705 base chamber to keep your primer pocket tight

22/250 Ackley is another way but you need to make a fire forming

as barrel you need a barrel with a long cylindrical aera around the chamber to be able to set back and rechamber, 22 hot caliber are a bit hot on barrel ).

DANTEC

Dont worry about cold weather ;-)
I did mean to reach 38-3900f/s in the summer time with 40grs. V-max
Thanks for the suggestions about other cal. But it's going to be .22BR
And i like it to be 24" long barrel, but i dont know what kind of speed i may get?

Paal,

I had a tight neck -- .246 -- on my 22BR Spec and I decided to have it opened up to .253. The Lapua brass is quite consistant as far a neck size goes even after necking it down. I don't turn my varmint brass and I get .251 on a loaded cartridge and I only slightly touch up the match brass which necks to .250 loaded.

The brass length measures out to 1.557 to 1.560 after necking so an overall case length for the reamer of 1.560 will allow for a light trimming to 1.555 to even things out.

You can definitely get up into the 3800 fps range with the 50s and close to 4000 with the 40s. See the recipes on this page: http://www.6mmbr.com/22BR.html

But, we'd probably start with a 26-inch barrel. Some barrels are just faster than others. You can always cut it back, but you can't make it longer!

The Pac-Nor 3 groove is a good choice. They tend to show good velocity. We would go with a HV taper, unless you really need to keep the weight down. A thicker barrel will heat up slower.

If this is a walking-around varminter, then going to a lighter taper makes sense.

good choice. I can't say enough good things about 22br! My 22-250 doesn't stand a chance.

I have a .253" neck and I have to turn the necks just a bit to get them to fit. I send 50 grain v-max at 3850 with Benchmark and get sub 3/4" inch groups at 300 yards.

I look @ the .22BR cartridge drawing on the link:Click Here

It says 1.520" total brass lenght.... I dont understand why you said 1.557 to 1.560" Did i miss something?

Paal,

That diagram comes from one of the reloading manuals and it may have been based on Remington brass. That also may be a minimum trim to length. Unfortunately QuickDESIGN does not have a diagram for the 22BR or I would have it on this site. Best to ask the guys who shoot 22BR and have necked down Lapua brass already to get the right trim dimension.

Also, contact Richard Franklin at www.RichardsCustomRifles.com

He's got a recent 22BR reamer.

Hello jaredc,
What kind of barrel length do you got?
I do not want any more than 24"..... This is because i'am going to have a silencer on.
,It's legal in Norway:D)

My barrel is 26" Hart but I am not at the max load. I had 50 grain v-max going 4000fps but my bolt lifted a little hard. I stuck with the 3850 fps load cause that's were I found the best accuracy.

So if i order a reamer from PT&G:
# Cal.22BR
# For Lapua brass
# 1.560 overall case length
# .252 neck,it's their .22BR Match reamer)Or should i go for .253/254???
# .025 Freebore

Will only use 40 and/or 50grs. V-max

Did i forget something?

Sorry it took so long to get back to you. As Mr Moderator said the 1.520 is a general spec for reloading manuals to ensure fit in multiple chambers. If you spec your reamer you can spec to fit a specific brand of brass, ie Lapua. I just necked down 500 pieces of Lapua brass and trimmed to 1.555 so they are consistently over the 1.555 measurement although some were barely touched. I like to use all of the brass I can to limit throat erosion. If you go with the .252 neck you will probably need to turn some of the necks though most will work without it. .253 gives the little extra so you can use no turn brass or if you do touch up the necks it is still not excessively worked during reloading.

Happy shooting,
Greg

paal: are you using a single shot follower? Im not sure if I want it installed.. maybe just use the magazine as the loading ramp.

Northman,

Yes, i'am going to use single follower. It is two different kinds of this follower. One glue in, and one on top of mag. follower.

Do you got a .22BR?

No I was thinking of building one.. but, I found out that the 6br will shoot 52 grain v-max at 3800, with higher bc than the 50 grain 22cal V-max.

Use the light pills from 0-300 meters, and heavier from 300-1000,not going to happen here in norway :) ) And I can do it all in a 1-8 twist barrel..

My main problem now is finding a stock that I like, and will be fine in a bench, and with bi-pod..
