New Nikon 4K LRF Reviews

Not sounding too good  Just have to see for myself. My biggest hope is that it will range through precipitation and snow when set to the proper target priority mode.

On my way home from overseas right now. Couple more flights and I'll get to check it out. Stay tuned for testing in the rocky mountains.

So I just got home. Threw a battery in the Nikon 4K and started shooting beams at pine trees (Non-reflective). It's bright and sunny out with no clouds. I started at the farthest ridge of trees I can see from house which is around 2,000 yards. Was not able to pick them up even when holding in scan mode. So just to make sure it was working, I shot a cliff on another closer ridge. It immediately and repeatedly gave me readings of +/- 1358 yards reliably with every shot. Didn't miss a single reading. Feedback was lightning fast. So I then worked down that ridge ranging trees back towards the 2K ridge again. I found that it gave out around 1775 yards. Which to me is quite impressive considering they are non reflective targets and it is a nice bright sunny day. My Leica 1600 is not capable of picking up those trees in the sunlight. The Sig Sauer 2200MR I had didn't even come close to these trees in any light.

Anyhow, that was just a quick test I always run with LRFs as soon as I take them out of the box. I have no doubt the Nikon will pick up the trees on the 2K ridge when the sun dips over the horizon. More to come....

I have one of the older nikon 1200 something. works good but the rated distance is on reflective targets. it'll range a stop sign if you can hold it at 1200yds but it cuts back to about 6-800 on brown fur. it'll range white spray paint on a gong at 1000. i have no issues with nikon rangefinders.
I had the 1200 gold and my performance was the same. prairie dogs and mounds out to about 700 give or take. Walked out and ranged the side of my truck at just over 1100, if I ever needed to shoot at my truck!

Sun finally dipped down to where it was still plenty light out, but very little direct sunlight in the laser path. Turns out I have trees on that ridge which are 2480+ yds. My Leica was only ever able to hit trees at 1904 yds a ways below the ridge. I guess those trees on the top are a lot further back than I thought. Anyhow, the Nikon was pinging readings of 2420 to 2480 as I held it in scan mode off hand.

It does not have a 1/4-20 tripod mounting nut so a person wpull have to adapt it somehow for tripod use.

I can already tell that in the mountains this rangefinder will perform very well. We don't need to directly hit the "animal" with the laser beam. With a steep slope and trees everywhere, we just need to hit the sloped ground the animal stands on or a tree next to it. If I can bounce almost 2500 off trees, there's no doubt the Nikon 4K will do well for my purposes and remain in my inventory. Of course I'll need to try n hit little targets on fields as a test for you flatlanders ;)

I will also add that the auto dimming feature on the readout is pretty awesome and adjusts very fast. I was in the shadow of my garage, then walked out to where it was brighter. I was watching the display as I left the darker area and the brightness of the display adjusted almost immediately as the ambient light changed. This was after the sun dipped down and I was taking the readings above so there wasnt a very significant difference in ambient light, but the unit still detected it and adjusted accordingly.

Any updates on this thread ? I had a kilo 2200 that recently was stolen that i thought performed very well, also had a kilo 2000 that performed well for a year then on a hunting trip it mysteriously started to only range stuff out to about 300 yrds, i found there customer service excellent myself, quickly got a rma, sent it in, received the new kilo 2200 with a note that said tested unit, lack of performance as stated by customer, replacing unit.
At a similar price point to the kilo 2200 just curious if the nikon is worth considering ?

Once you get past low magnification and hideus reticle ,it works better than ither Kilo 2000 or 2200 , of course it no way near their claims and can't play with top dog Leica 2700 , but for what it is its just about best bang for the buck . But don't expect too much on smaller targets.
