New Member, new rifle build (Done!!! with pic)

Just saying hello to all fellow shooters. I am new to this forum but am a member on a couple of others and looking to learn what ever tricks are out there. I do use this site for much of my own curiosity. I am also doing my first build it is on a savage long action flat base with a 26" shilen 1 in 8" twist varmit countour chambered in 260 remington. I have a Bushnell 3200 10x scope that I will be using untill I upgrade further down the line considering the 3200 5x15. I have a one piece Lupold mount that I will be using for the time being however I am not very fond of it and am looking for suggestions for future upgades. I look forward to whatever info can be provided and chating with everyone. I would eventualy like to consider competition but for now my primary intrest is with hunting. I also enjoy target shooting and predetor / varmit hunting. I shoot 223 and 25-06 but am building this new rifle with hopes of it filling a area for 500 to 1000 yard varmiting / predetor hunting. The 260 rem seems to fill what I am looking for good B.C., doesnt use to much powder, factory ammo available if Im in a pinch (I do reload), enough energy for long range cyotes. But I mainly just want to realy start shooting acurate long range and learn what I can before moving to competition. Well Im sure I will have more questions but I will also share my knowledge for those that ask(it may be limited (I work mainly with 25-06 and 325wsm). Let me know what you think of my new build and what I might expect for the 500 to 1000 yard performance with this setup.

Re: New Member, new rifle build

You picked the right platform to build your own rifle. Through Google, you will find all kind of tune-up info on Savage as well as on the Savage Shooter board.

for 500 to 1000 yd you will probably need 20 MOA ramp on the scope base. Actually, Burris ZEE rings with replaceable plastic inserts will work well for your rifle. Did you know many of the old flat back actions had the scope mount holes drilled crooked? That is why my old 110 has the adjustable windage rear mount. I used the Burris ZEE and had no problem adjusting both for windage as well as long range height.

ultra25-06,
Welcome to 6br, this is a great forum I hope you enjoy it, I sure do! I agree with Norm,
you have picked a good platform to start with. I prefer the picatinny style bases,
Picatinny, badger, and Ken Farrell make nice bases.I have used the 20moa Ken Farrell on my last couple of savage rifles. There less $ than the Badger and picatinny's and work great. If Norm is right and the base screw hole's were drilled off center you may be better off with what you have and the burris zee rings. The .260 is a great little cartridge and you can buy good .308 lapua brass and resize it.Good luck with your build, let us know how it goes.
Wayne.

Savage long action, 26" Shilen heavy varmit 260 Remington barrel, Savage over sized bolt handle, Choate long action aluminum bed blind mag stock, factory trigger adjusted to 3lbs., Bushnell Elite 3200 10x, Redfield rings and bases. Eventually the recoil lug will be replaced and the trigger as well.

I threw a similar build together a year ago in the .260. I used a short action in the bvss stock. I bought a used pac-nor barrel with 1-8 twist. That thing SHOOTS! I am guessing yours will ,too. Mine doesn't like hot loads. I use 40gr. H4350 but it zings the 139 lapuas to 600 yards very accurately. You'll love it.

Welcome to the forum, lapua is now making .260 brass and will be available sometime in february. You picked a great cartridge and you will love it.
