New Member

Hey, I'm a new member from central MA.
I shot a little on paper years ago with a Remington Varmint SP. in 25-06
with a Redfield 3200 12X scope.
I compete in NRA Precision pistol both indoor and a little outdoor.
My club has a nice 300yard range and the plans are in motion to bring in machines to make it better.
So now im thinking that I would like to buy a rifle to shoot in the clubs Monday AM
Geezer informal bench rest group.
I reload currently for Pistol and an AR 223 and my 7-08 deer rifle.
I am kind of interested in the Savage model 12 either their BR of LRPV in 6mm Norma BR.
There are none available at present but I figured I would ask people who know more about accurate rifles than I if this is
a good way to get my feet wet or is there a better direction to go.
I am soon to be 70 years old and retired so I time to spend at the range.
I'm not looking to have a custom rifle built and savage seems to fit my budget.
Thanks in advance for any advise.

Welcome!! Worcester lol

I will place a WTB add after my 30 day wait to post period is up.
I wanted to stay within 3K for rifle and optic.
but.........plans change
I did check out Shooter Corner
My issue there is lack of knowledge as to actions and barrels.
6MM PPC is the most common caliber for sale and I know it has been king at 100 yards.
If it still is and is it still stable at 300, I don't know.
Seems it should be is 223 can be with correct twist and bullets..
I sure have a lot to lern.
Gary, welcome to the forum! Great group here and place to be. As others have said, Shooters Corner is a great place to buy a good used rifle. I encourage you to call Bob White there. Mornings are best. He is very knowledgeable about competitive shooting, and will steer you right. Bob lists used “Benchrest” rifles, and “Varmint” rifles. I bought a 6BR Varmint rifle from him years ago that is a Hart barrel on a Remington 700 action that shoots extremely well. Much better than I can. I encourage you to shop in his “Benchrest” category or list. You will see that most of those are on aftermarket actions. In other words high quality actions that may be a Remington 700 clone but much more precise, and very well made. There are lots of good barrels out there. Hart is excellent, but so are Shilen, Bartlein, Krieger, and Lilja. One way to know which barrels to favor is to look at the competition winning shooter’s equipment lists. One other important consideration, if a rifle is sold as a .262” neck for instance, the brass you use will require neck turning. Good to know before you commit to buying one with those specs.
There are guys on here that know this stuff. I just tag along. Think about calling Bob.

Welcome again.
Best regards, Peter.

I don't compete as much as many on here do, but I think the 6ppc will be VERY difficult to beat at 300. I even won a very small long range benchrest 600yd competition with my short range 6ppc on a very calm morning.
