NEW MAGNETO SPEED

Bill Norris

Back in the Day
Just received my new Sporter M S today and right out of the gate I'm not impressed. However, I have not had a chance to use it yet at all. Hopefully it will perform well enough to change my mind. If you own one and have any compliments good or bad please post here. I'd like to hear them all. Thanks in advance.

I received the Sporter as a gift, and I agree it was less than impressive. However, my display had a broken battery box cover and they upgraded me to the V3 display. Having used both now, I'd certainly recommend to anyone who might read this that if you're considering one buy the V3.

Bill,

Curious why you are not impressed.

I am happy with mine, it is perfect for what I bought it for. It fits in my range bag and I use it for doing a fast check of my loads before adjusting my scope. I do my load development using a ProChrono with the bluetooth and my Samsung tablet and port the data to Excel. But the Sporter is used when I want a quick check when temps have changed since I last checked. Temps where I shoot can vary by 70F over the course of the year

They work fine. Make sure you understand the software settings and make sure it attaches firmly to the barrel and does not move fore/aft during your shooting sessions.

You may have to tighten the strap after a couple shots.
I like that idea of the external mount IF it positions the Magnetospeed wand truly parallel to the bore and the whole mount doesn't move at all.

Read the available instructions multiple times.

Had the same issue my magneto speed sporter display would pop open under recoil it is mounted with a wiser precision mount to my rifle although magneto speed did send me a new unit without any charge

I was loaned one at the range, after fighting with my chrono. I was impressed enough I ordered one that day.
I have mounted it on various rifles and pistols. First shot readings, about 95%. When it doesn’t read, it was always me.
It has caught my 17’s with speeds up to 4200+.
It is no more cheesey than the bare bones shooting chroni.
I keep wood or brass dowels of proper size to check my spacing from the bore.

My plastic read out box was broken as well. Saw several reviews that mentioned it. Easy fix with a dab of epoxy. I think they just tighten the screws to tight at the factory.

Downfall
I may shoot for groups with it on, but not high expectations of great groups.

My frustration level has went wayyyy down.

I can spend a bit and get a kit so it doesn’t mount to the barrel.

I have one, no real complaints but it is my first chrono. Easy to use once you use a couple times, I tried the BT app but couldn't get it to work, so I just use old school paper and pen to write down the #'s and move on. I only use it at the end of load development for the most part as it does affect groups & POI at times.

I am curious how you end up feeling about it after use Bill. Debating the V3 myself. My old Chrono has gave up the ghost apparently. Don't think the sporter will work with a suppressor and I normally only shoot suppressed.

When I first mounted my sporter,on a .875" barrel it wouldn't detect shots - had to adjust the sensitivity settings to, IIRC, more sensitive.

For me, it is much easier to use than the sky screen chronos. And, it enables me to take velocity settings anywhere it's safe to fire - i.e., I don't have to go to the range.

The Magneto is one of those tools that I will always have. They are very simple to set up and use and accurate to boot. If for some reason mine ever quits working I will buy another one right away. I like the fact that I can get good accurate data quickly without ever having to go down range to set things up and its small enough to fit in my range bag.

I have a V2. It is fantastic. If I find myself in need of another I will by the Sporter model and deal with it. We as shooters can get very picky about minor things.
