New Long rang rifle caliber, your oppinions

I'm gonna be building a new rifle soon and have narrowed the calibers down to 3, the 7mmRUM, 300RUM and 338 edge which is a 300RUM necked up to .338 giveing a bit more speed than the 338RUM. I thought about using the 338 Lapua case and improving it as the parent for all the cals but the cost of the brass and the rem 700 only being marginal for that case head has made me look at the RUM cases more

I plan to use a 30" Krieger barrel heavy conture on a blueprinted Rem 700 action. This gun will be used for shootng to 1000yds out to one mile or so, for the bullets I'll more than likely use the 180gr Berger for the 7mm, the 210Breger for the 300RUM and the 300gr Sierra Match King for the 338Edge.

I was just wanting a little bit of an oppinion of what everybody else would build, I will likely sell this gun after i get a chance to play with it, this has made me lean toward the 300RUM and the 7mmRUM as factory ammo can be bought for both of them.

Any of you guys shoot any of these calibers? I'd like to hear your imput.

I've built rifles in the 3 calibers you list.

The 7 RUM is too overbore and give too much velocity for the 180 Berger.

The 300 RUM works for me only with Sierra 240 grs MK.

An the 338 EDGE is perfect for the 300 SMK. I can push them to 2800 f/s from a 26" barrel and a good brake ! For me, it's the way to go...

I shoot a .300 Ultra in a 700 Sendero. Im still trying to find the load as of right now lol. When I find it I will post it up for ya.

So you want to go one Mile? Its alot of fun thats for sure. I spent close to a year getting ready to do just that a few years ago. I had read an article about a one mile shoot and they had mentioned the smallest caliber to do a 1 mile shot at that time was a 300 Ultra. It got me thinking.,oh oh) A couple of emails I was told it could not be done with somthing smaller, well sir Im here to say that I ussually take that as a challange. Hours were spent on bullet selection and what would work best out of my 7mm remington Magnum Sendero. where I was going to take the shot and making the most pefect ammo I could. I Chrono'd the ammo that morning then went out with my hunting partner to the Cabins by the river. We set up and he sat under a hill to spot shots for me. It turns out that was not needed as I was able to see my hits when I got back on the rifle scope. 3 seconds flight time.
Ive done it two more times since with a few freinds. Nate did it with a 6mm and 115's !!!!!

check out the pics. I hope you get a chance to try it its alot of fun.

We took a two way radio and placed it behind the target on VOX and when I hit the plate it would key the mic and you could here it plane as day DONG!!!!!!!!!!!!

good time good times

Wow man thats some really good shooting sir. How many times could you hit it? I mean like 2 out of 3 shots or what?

needing atleast a 300 ultra is just not true, as you guys have proven. i bought the david tubb shooting 1 mile dvd. he used a 6.5x284 with 142s at 3000fps and had multiple hits in the 10 ring of a 1000yd target at 1 mile. as long as the bullet is supersonic anything should do.

Thanks Guys. It was alot of fun. Im sorry to Hijack this post.

I used 65MOA of elevation from my normal 300 yard zero, thats 4 full revalutions on the leupold scope plus 5 min. I have a Ken Farrel 30MOA scope base. The scope is --- get this 3.5-14 Veri XIII with a target dot 30mm main tube and 50mm obj.. I really like this scope it has been super repeatable. Mark4 rings I got for a song and a dance from a freind. and the rifle is a STOCK Sendero!!!!!!!!!!

I shot 9 times that day. I hit it twice. once On my 3rd shot and again on my 9th. then I quit. I had so many that were soooo close. Consider that a 1mph wind moves the bullet 1.3MOA or 23" and the target is 24" wide. you can see how this could be a problem in the wide open prarie. You cant even feel a 1mph wind on your face yet detect it when the wind is blowing 8MPH!

Since then I have done it two more time with better hit ratio. 50% to be exact. Im pretty happy with that.

1200" of drop from my 300 yard zero.

If any one wants to try it The cabins right below it are for rent and you can shoot all day long with your buddies.

location is Elgin North Dakota.

I better get going I have a match this morning.

There is a myth that bullets hit some kind wall of "turbulence" at the speed of sound, and start madly tumbling.

Its not true. There is no wall.

There ARE times when bullets tumble, but it is from other causes.

If it were from "speed of sound" turbulence, then NO bullets could make it bast the 1050 fps "barrier"... but they do.
It's no myth. 168 and 180 grain Sierras go dynamically unstable in flight around Mach 1, and tumble as a result. Other bullets,i.e., 175 grain Sierra) don't tumble, but they do wobble more during the transition. Why? Aerodynamic forces are changing rapidly in the transsonic zone,Mach 0.8 to 1.2), this results in shifts in airflow and drag. The balance between spin, airflow, and drag determines if the projectile remains point-first in flight following an external disturbance. Get the balance wrong, and the projectile doesn't return to point-first flight.

Actual behavior in the transsonic zone depends on projectile design, and as discussed, some don't remain stable when in this zone.

I wonder if we could get the Brass for the 14.5x115mm Russian round? That would make a serious threat to the 12.7x99mm if you improved the case and worked out some super-high BC bullets. But I think the brass would be a problem.

I would opt for the 338AM made by Kirby Allen. It's based on the 408CT case. A lot of info can be found here http://www.longrangehunting.com/forums/f23/allen-mag-shooters-group-18433/

I believe it to still be supersonic past 3000yds with the 265grn AT RBBT's

That sounds like a great rig, except for the fact that it is based on a Chey Tac case.

I've been doing some research on the Cheytac chambering - the .375 CheyTac to be precise, but the lack of readily available decent brass has prevented me from going beyond longing and web-based research. When we get to the point that I know there is a brass supplier as well as a high BC bullet sourse, I'm going to order my action and barrel from Lawton.

Kirby is currently building one of these for me and he has a source of brass that will be making the brass to his specs. This will hopefully alleviate some of the brass issues. Here is a link to his 6467 Yd P-dog grand slam.

The 338AM sounds incredible, any chance there is a diagram or picture of it floating about somewhere. Do you know who Kirby is going to use as his brass supplier?

I do not know the name of mfg. of the brass he will be using. However if you e-mail him, kballen@3rivers.net ) he will be more that happy to answere any questions you may have. He is very personable and will respond with a very detailed answere to any of your questions.

The rifle he is building for me is based on a bat action, single shot w/lft port eject), McMillan A-5 and Lilja 32-inch brl. My main focus for this rifle is elk.

I do shoot out to a mile regularly and can share some experiences. I own a variety of rifles from the 22 to the 338.

I can say that the 300gr MK leaving at anything over 2800fps makes quite an impression at 1 mile. There is little doubt that the bullet has arrived.

I shot a 300RUM with 220gr MK at that same outing. Again, no problems seeing the hits. Just as effective in the winds.

I also play with a 6.5 Mystic, 7 mystic/RM and they would also make the trip just fine.

An F class shooter I know/compete with takes his 6BR and 105gr Bergers to 1 mile and hits a 17" gong with startling regularity.

You don't need a boomer if you just want to plink at LR. Yes, a higher velocity/high BC bullet is easier to drive. Larger heavier bore bullets are easier to spot impacts, but not necessary.

I will be spending alot of time with my 6.5 Mystic 139gr Lapuas at 2900fps, this year out to a mile and beyond.

Got a 6XC type project on the drawing board. Will be pushing 105gr Bergers at 2900/3000fps at reduced pressures.

Will also push a 223 and 75/80g Amax as far as I can go. I have seen it go 1450yds accurately so wonder if it can also make the mile.

On the issue of tumbling, I have seen it with a 308 and Sierra bullets. Shooting with a owner of a very nice HS tacky rifle. 175gr MK's if memory serves me.

At 1350yds, deadly accurate. By 1400 and change, sprayed all over the place. Back to 1300+yds, right on. Back out to 1400+, all over. Was really neat to see and the first time I have seen it repeated and so obvious.

Some bullets do hit a 'wall' at some velocity and tumble. Is that the sound barrier, spin rate too slow, or some combo? Don't know but it does happen.

However, if a bullet does fly with stability well beyond where it is supposed to go subsonic, it will likely fly well for as far as you can reach up with your optics.

Initial speed doesn't matter at extreme distances so I would again, recommend against the bigger cases. Barrel wear is very high and increased performance is marginal.
