New Lapua brass and short Headspace

How many here are getting a few cases per box that have very short headspace? I have a few palma cases (sr) and now at least one 6.5x47L cases that are so short they won't fire. I have been attributing this to the CCI primers but after the 47L didn't fire off the Tulas we measured it .020" under the go gauge, brand new.

I never had an issue with Lapua when it was gold box, but now have a hand full of issues with blue box in two different calibers. I jump all my rounds and don't fancy wasting 200-300 shots per barrel jamming into the lands and fire forming. I need to be able to extract live rounds without filling my action with powder so jamming is not an option.

So far this hasn't been a huge deal but for 16 years I have had stellar results with Lapua, save for one or two per box with creased or split necks or shoulders. Those are easy to cull. Checking the datum on every new case is BS.

Anyone else ran into this? What is your work around?

I have chambered and fired cases that were .127” shorter from the shoulder to the case head than the chamber when measured from the shoulder of the chamber to the bolt face. Meaning I chambered 8mm57 ammo in an 8mm06 chamber and then fired it. The brand of case had nothing to do with anything. I did not have cases that failed to fire because I am not using the same action you are using.


I can only guess you are using a push feed action; meaning the extractor is not jumping the rim because the shoulder of the case is too far from the shoulder of the chamber. I have no infatuation with Lapua brass; if I purchased another brand of new brass that had varying length of brass in one batch I would suspect the manufacturer allowed their equipment to get out of adjustment.


The upside; the manufacturer is now making cases for short chambers. My favorite cases are the cases that are too long between the shoulder and the case head to chamber. That would be making cases for reoladers that know what to do with a case that came out of a cookie cutter. I use 280 Remington cases for chambers that are too long from the shoulder to the bolt face, there is no way a reloader can miss with an additional .051” case length when the additional .051” is between the shoulder of the case and case head.
