New IMR powders 4166 4451 7977

Anybody have any info? IMR produced or Thales/ADI? Replacement for 4895-4350-4831 or just new military formulas introduced to the civilian market?

When I blew up one photo, it said "Made in Canada (eh)" so I presume they are made at the old Dupont factory.

Not replacements, but additions, supposedly.

Yeah, check out the Hodgdon website. They already have info on the 3 powders, as well as some load data using them.

I can't imagine Hodgdon making a powder that sits right next to IMR 8208XBR so I am HOPING that the new 4166 comes closer to the slower end of the mid-range burn rate.. I am hoping between say Varget / IMR 4227 and the "OLD" Imr 4007 powder. This powder is supposed to be "temp-INsensitive", small extruded type powder and clean burning. This would make it IDEAL for heavy bullets in the 308 or 6Dasher or lighter bullets in the 6.5 x 47 Lapua.. When I can find it AND the time to do some development, I will give this powder an honest shot!

Yeah I saw the data first before the press releases. 4166 sorta looks like between 8208 and Varget. Like a fast batch of 4895.

Shootdots- the 308 (and other popular cartridges) data is updated with the new powders.

I read them... However, until I see them used in Nosler, Hornady etc.etc.. I will reserve judgement. I want to see them plied against other powders in that particular burn rate range, from a few sources.. I also need to find out about the characteristics of the powder.. Sooner or later, Handloader magazine and other "testing" sources will vet the powder and I will get the info I need, at least to start preliminary load development on a rifle or two..

You will never see them used by Nosler, Hornady, etc, etc.

Commercial companies do not use "canister powder" (What we use). They use bulk, ungraded powders, and have to speed test every batch, and adjust their loading machines accordingly.

Hodgdon, Nosler, Hornady and VV load manuals is where I get many of the places I begin loading from. I don't know if they use the canisters or not, however, they list the powders we use.. I have found Nosler to be pretty close with Hodgdon next in line.. Now most of them have different loads as "Starting and Max" but once I get data from about 3 manuals, I got a good place to start..

How do these companies produce a reloading manual that millions of us use if they don't test powders?

I did not say they didn't "test" them - Nosler and Hornady manufacturer factory ammunition - they do NOT use "our" powders in their factory ammunition. They use powder that is not speed tested - they do the testing and then load it.
