New Gunsmith tooling...

Well....Mr. Grass, I do build custom guns, and get paid well for my time. Any fixture that I can get for a fair price that helps me is worth the money spent. As gunsmiths, we ARE tool collectors by DNA. It happens, we love tooling, and not taking hours to make something is a plus. We ALL make tools and jigs as needed so we aren't lowly smiths.

Well then,, make one! I guarantee you can do it cheaper in your own shop than giving that money to someone else to make it for you. Do you pay someone else to build personal rifles for you, or do you do that yourself?

Guys you need to know the right people. I have a friend who works for the biggest employer in the country, he has made both my cat head and a D1-4 direct mount action truing fixture.

Every time he delivers a fixture I have request.......................................................

It's A TAX REBATE!!

oh and by the way the direct mount truing fixture is rigid as hell, all steel and is head and shoulders above one stuck in a 4 jaw.

When you come up with a price....let us know. I see $50-100 in materials and by the time I drive to town to pick it up and set it up in the machines, lay it out, build it, clean up my mess.....it starts looking like a bargain. I built all of my own jigs and fixtures, but items that take more material get expensive to produce.

Nat, I would definitely be interested in the D1-4 action truing jig. Possibly the catshead/spider too. What is the likely hood that you are going to go ahead with this?

Nat, I know you are not going to like this but here goes.........Shars has the 6 inch diameter D1-4 chuck mount for $58.00 in last years catalog. You don't have to buy three lugs for $35.00 each. All you have to do is either .... 1. Make an adapter that bolts to your action truing jig and then bolts to the D1-4 chuck mount or.... 2. Make a six inch diameter action truing jig and bolt it directly to the 6 inch D1-4 chuck mount.

Mike,

I bought one of those D1-4 back plates last summer and made a spider chuck out of it for under $100. Where did you hear that D1-4 cam lock bolts were $35 apiece??? That's just plain ol' robbery.

Hey Nat,
I'm the first to admit it if I am wrong. I put my foot in my mouth when I suggested using a three jaw chuck to mount the action truing jig....and nobody caught it!. If you put the action truing jig in a three jaw chuck you don't have access to all 4 screws since one of the three jaws gets in the way........

What a great idea. It sure would shorten the set up time.
I was just using my Gre-tan jig today and it moved in my 4Jaw, I had to recenter it.
When I'm done with this project I'll mount it to a faceplate for my D1-3 lathe.

Jester:
Viper makes a nice video, I would guess he picked up the idea from Gre-Tan.

Nope, got the idea from Rick Piccaretta from Williamsport. I have it dialed into my four jaw chuck and just take the chuck on and off when I'm chambering.

Put it in a good 3 jaw and be done with it. It's a waste of time, with such a low rpm range, to use a 4 jaw in the first place.

Regards, Paul.

I received both the Prototypes: D1-4 Cathead chuck and D1-4 Action truing jig today. I will post pictures tomorrow. They look good don't have a price from Dave Kiff yet.
