New Gun Project

OK - I think it's time to start on my first full up custom rifle. The problem is... Exactly WHAT

The club I belong to has it's annual "turkey shoot" - The BR shoot used to be fairly laid back - 1 shot, closest to center. Was originally meant for hunting rifles, and I've won the shoot with my customized Ruger M77 in 308

Thing is, the last couple of years, we've had a few 6PPCs,Mostly Kelby's) showing up.

So, what I want is a BR rifle, mostly for fun club matches, and shooting against myself - I doubt I'll EVER go to a "real" benchrest match

Ideas?

Why 30BR?

I forgot to say one thing - they don't count "closest edge" the go to "center of hole" to "Make it fair for smaller calibers"

I still say the 30BR would be my choice. Reason is that it takes the tuning part of BR all but out of the equation. Many, many shooters struggle to keep their ppc's shooting in the changing conditions of the day. The 30BR is much more forgiving when it comes to rifle tune. Go to a group shoot and you will see exactly what I'm talking about, actually what everyone is talking about. One guy is saying he's going down in charge, while another is going up. The best group shooters are the ones that know when to change their load and which way to go on powder charge, well they also read the flags pretty well. Score matches are full of competitors that don't change their loads, ever. Example: I chambered two Bartlein 30 barrels a few months back for my personal rifle. Both of them like a stiff charge of N130 with a Fowler or a 10x bullet barely into the lands. I don't preload, because I have that fear that my gun won't shoot the given load once I reach the match, but I've only changed that load one time, and I shoot a match just about every weekend. I shot the NBRSA group Nationals a couple weeks ago with my ppc and spent the whole week chasing the tune of the rifle. Bottom line is that both the 30BR and 6PPC are exceptionally accurate chamberings, the 30 just isn't as finicky as the ppc.

Interesting that the 6PPC is THAT sensitive. I've been out of the sport,as much as an armchair reader was in) for a couple of years,Used to read Precision Shooting and Accurate Rifle all the time), and I never realized that the 6PPC was that sensitive. I thought they were talking .1s and low .2s vs high 2.s and .3s

As for beating the Ruger - well, duh, although when I was practicing, my groups averaged in the .3s, and I'd occasionally pull off a low .2 - I DID say the rifle was tricked out - worked action, Hart HV barrel, match chamber, aluminum block bedded, free floated barrel, Timney set trigger...

Oh, and as for the distance - 100 yd nominal - actual is about 91 yds

OK - so let's assume 6mm BR - any recomendations on actions, Barrels, stocks, etc? I assume the trigger will be a Jewel
