New electronic scale..update

I received my new electronic wonder...Tree brand HRB 103..The base line, strain gauge model..High resolution Balance...Pretty friggin cool !!! I'm, as you guys know, pretty old school...Got it up & running..Set the 100 gram test weight on her..All looks good..Switched it over to grains...Started weighing cases to check things out..Took my time...Found one case I liked for the test...I ran that 6 or eight times..About 15mins between tests...127.22 ...to 127.26...only one hit on the 127.26...then i set to using the features...found an old brass powder pan, tared that out & did the test with a 39 gr sierra bullet same deal, 6 tests.. ten to 15 mins apart..I watched the readout w/o the bullet & only once i disturbed zero..39.12 grains 5 of 6 tries one at 31.10..So far so good...I used my old Lyman beam balance to establish my weights...Then I found a problem..With my old Lyman D-7...I weighed out a charge 44.5 grains 3X's ..New scale reads it as 44.62..Hummm..take it back to the old balance & it was over..I'm going to be playing with this thing a while..& then the ammo loaded has to be tested at 1000 yards...But so far, I'm liking this unit...I forgot to mention..ONE KERNEL of H4350 reads at .02 of a grain.I think I have moved forward into the 21st century....Mike in ct

So happy for guys when hard earned money spent works out for the best.
Maybe I'm going the wrong direction?
Nah
Nice shopping bro '

Under 300 bucks & so far it is sweet...One of you guys pm me your text number...I'll give you a pic to post...only six done but this is going to be my wife's scale upstairs...Mike in ct

I would really like to get in with the times but I just can seem to get away from my beams for consistency and repeatability. I tried the new MyWeigh 300 and I guess it's ok but I just can't bring myself to trust it. Mikeinct I'm sure yours is a lot better than the ones I've tried and I wish the best with it. Maybe one day I'll leap into the 21 century.... Lol

I use a My Weigh 300. I run it on batteries. It seems to be more stable that way.

And we'll probably be holding out for a while. Hey look at it like this, were really in the times we're using a cordless (scales with a cord). All the new tools at Homedepot are cordless.

Traded some notes with my Buddy who runs the Saturius ?? The expensive one..Anyway he tells me a kernel of Varget on his scale is .02 of a grain.. H4350 is .03 per kernel...Here is part of my report to him..When my scale reads 44.42 I need three kernels to get to my desired load of 44.5 grains of H4350....First 25 done.."Forward" only 125 more to go on this batch...Mike in Ct

Very nice scale! I've found my old RCBS digital to be pretty uniform in charge weights. I always pour it into the balance beam pan after it's weighed out to double check. Haven't had to discard a charge yet, but then I'm not shooting bench rest or 1000 yards either. Sure makes life easier than trickling in the last little bit on a balance beam.

I use a plastic straw the bending type " with an angle cut for adding or removing a kernel etc. seems to work easier than a trickler

Need some details to compare these new fangled wonders Eric. Note: I've got 75 cartridges done so far..Wife is lovin' it, She has not touched it yet .."Her new scale"..& I'm loading my Nephews ammo for the Ridgway Championship...Anyone else here see the problems I have ??? Mike in Ct

Mike, I hope you are enjoying your new scale. Mine is a Swiss made Ohaus EP114C , a .0001gram (.0015gr.) scale with internal calibration. It does not need a cal weight. If you do use a cal weight it has the ability to transfer that accuracy to the internal calibration if so desired. The readout is .002 grains. This scale is no longer made.

In order to get the best use for this or your scale I recommend a Dandy trickler. Here is the link.

https://dandyproductsllc.com/products/dandy-2-speed-electric-powder-trickler

This trickler has the ability to easily drop 1 kernal at a time. The way I use it is to dispense a powder charge on my RCBS Chargemaster and then place it on the scale. The Chargemaster has an aftermarket insert that significantly helps overcharges. (17.99 on EBAY). With a little practice you can tell how many kernals will be needed and trickle that number without waiting for the scale to settle.

With a .002 grain sensitivity the settle is very quick at .01 grains which is less than the weight of 1 kernal of powder. Settling to .002 grains takes a little longer.

I have the Chargemaster set to auto dispense so once I place the pan on the it starts dispensing.

Once I fill the case and seat the bullet the Chargemaster has or is about to finish and the cycle begins.

Some reloaders use Lee dippers in lieu of the Chargmaster at the expense of a little more trickling.

I have 2 reloading benches shaped like an L so the Ohaus sits on one bench while the arbor press and Chargemaster sits on the other. This prevents vibrations from effecting the scale.

I have two Ohaus .0001gr scales and one .001gr scale. I have been debating on selling one. With women it's shoes, for me it's scales.

Eric

Some tips:
Turn your scale on an hour before use.
Check the calibration if necessary.
Carefully level it as perfect as you can.
Avoid any air circulation near the scale.
Keep the humidity up to at least 40% to help prevent static.
Use battery power (if so equipped) if you have drifting problems.
Keep cell phones and CFL bulbs out of the area.
Put the scale on a solid table and prevent any vibration to it.
Place the pan or weight on the weighing platform very gently, bumping it can cause errors.
Use an object close to your powder charge as a test. A light bullet, 40 grains or so. Keep this for a test and use
it every few weighings (10-20) to be sure the scale doesn't drift.
Observe the negative weight when you remove the pan (when you zero with the pan on the scale).
If it varies, you observed weight will probably do it too.
When you place the pan on the scale, give it a 2-5 seconds to stabilize.

The Dandy trickler (about $100) is well worth the money. It vibrates the powder down a tube and is fully adjustable, allowing me to drop 1 kernel of Varge powder at a time (.02 grain average)
