Best Powder Scale

Greetings!

I am wondering what balance-type scales you all feel is the best. I am a bit "old school" and prefer to weigh each charge on a regular balance scale rather than using an electronic scale.

Any suggestions will be appreciated.

I am still using my 20+ year old RCBS 5-0-5 with no feeling of urgency to replace it any time soon. I have alway kept it clean and covered. Should last another 20.

I've been using the same 5-0-5 since 1976 and have had no problems or complaints with it. A great scale for the money, I have no plans to replace it but if that became necessary I'd probably step up to the 10-10, which IIRC sells for about double the price. Of course, I didn't have the income to afford one back in 1976.

I have a $700 Denver Instrument Digital scale and a RCBS 10-10 Scale. My electronic scale measures to the 0.01 grain. I checked my RCBS 10-10 and it was right on the money. It is the third 10-10 scale that I have had, my brother's keep wanting them because they are so accurate.

The RCBS 505 is the same scale, just not as fancy with out all the whistles and bells.

Ohaus made the scales for RCBS, if you can find one of them, you will probably get a real deal on it.

The main difference between the 10-10 and the 505 is that the 10-10 has a cover that snaps into place to protect the entire unit for transport and it weighs up to 1000 grains,I think).

The other feature of the 10-10 is that it has a "wheel" that dials in the 1 grain increments and the 505 has a little piece of shim stock that you slide along. The little piece of shim stock can get bumped out of place as you remove the pan from the scale leading to inconsistent loads,it does not happen very often, but it does happen).

They are both great scales and I would buy one off of ebay what ever you do.

Good luck!

Like many people, I started out with a 5-0-5 and still have it...packed away in it's box where it's been for the last 5-6 years . It's perfectly suited for the purpose for which it was intended but like many people my age my eyes have taken on...parallax errors over the years which make it impractical to use. I have a Redding BR30, also sitting in it's box. I also prefer to weigh, but until someone pops us with an EMP device, I'll just stick with my digital. -Rod-
