New Custom 6BR pictures, Component and Load Info

Jeff,JLM), if I were you I would get the McMillan Tooley MBR. If you call Brunos Shooters supply, they usually have a bunch of MBR's in stock. Their number is 623-587-7641. They usually have some fully inletted and semi inletted. You could also put something in the want adds like ' WTB a Tooley MBR stock with a Savage Target Action inlet' That's exactly how I found mine. If you order one through McMillan, you'll have to wait 26 weeks. Call Brunos and also put something in the want adds like I said and you should be able to find one pretty quick.

Thanks for the ideas. I called Bruno's but no dice. I did however get enough interest in the WTB add I can go with something that way and NO WAIT.

I've got another problem now. In looking for stocks I called Stockade Stocks. Kevin there was a great guy to talk to as is Jim Hart. However, Kevin at Stockade is all over these Savage Actions and talking to him as earned me great confidence in what he's got. Barrel for Barrel I'd go with the Hart over the Benchmark. However, that's only one part of the equation. Factor in the shipping and the Stockade gunsmithing and Benchmark barrel is about the same as Hart.

Maybe someone reading this can offer some personal experience with either. Is squaring the action and lapping the lugs all that's needed on a Savage precision Target Action? Or is it money well spent to have someone like Kevin at Stockade really put some time on the action?

There isn't much to do about Benchmark of Hart on the web. No news is good news. Seems like if even one person has a problem it's all over the web nowadays.

Thanks for any $.02 you can give me,
JLM

JLM,
I may be mistaken but, I am under the impression that with a Savage action the only things that need to be done is to square the face and rethred for the new barrel. The lugs dont need to be touched since its a floating bolt head.

Scout1,

There's tons of work you can do to any action to make it shoot just a little bit better. I don't think I'm in that league. Keep in mind my best shooter is a Remington 788 carbine .308 and it's all factory so this build is a huge step for me. For sure with a savage you'll want to square the bolt face, square the receiver, square the barrel nut, and square the recoil lug so that all fits perfect. Then lap the lugs and Stockade will start there. As far as the lugs go I don't think they'll touch the lugs but will cut the ramps to match the lugs if necessary for an even better lug lapping result.

Take care,
JLM

I have 3 Savage target actions, a 30BR, 6BR and 6.5X47 all shoot awesome. I had the 30BR gone over at FRed's and I can't see a difference with the other ones that I didnt have done as far as accuracy goes. I also do use freds wood stocks for them they are full inlet and pretty much ready to go except for final bedding. They track well and shoot awesome. I'll post some pics when I get home.

I have one Savage action Rifle in 6BR and it has shot in the .0 but on avg with various load batches, it shoots in the low .2s at 100. And the action is factory stock, and I installed the Pac-Nor barrel, and bedded it in a Richards MF stock, my first build.
Now I doing the same thing for a 22BR, using a factory stock Savage action that was a 223, changing the bolt head, installing a Pac-Nor barrel, bedding the stock, and changing the trigger, and that's it.
Im not convinced that having that work done on the action and bolt is worth it. As easy as it is to install and remove the barrel, I would try the action factory stock first, it might surprise you.

I made up my mind to go with Stockade Rifles and sent everything out today. I also got the notice my 6br brass shipped from EABCO woohoo! I orderd from Cabelas about three weeks earlier and haven't seen anything yet. I may cancel it and go somewhere else.

Anyhow, so now I'm in the wait for my rifle. The anticipation is going to be horrible.

For better or worse here's what I went with: Savage target action, 6mmbr, 25' barrel, .920 at muzzle with recessed target crown, Stockade PDS stock, out of mold), Burris signature rings, Elite 4200 tactical scope, 2 lb accu trigger.

I get it Tuesday. And I'm working out of town all week!

I want to finish the stock and I want to shoot it and I need to load some rounds. I think I'm just gonna shoot it the way it is and save the finishing for the winter.

I'll post up some pictures when I get it. I'm curious to see how the out of mold stock looks and how much finishing it's going to need.

Take care,
JLM

Thanks,

It'll be a varmint gun and maybe see some deer and turkey. So it'll probably end up with a Krylon paint job. Target games are fun too. Range time is important and offers a nice time to show off your new rig to your buddies. I might sit out on the power line with it and see if I can take the head off a turkey this fall. Single shot varmint and hunting rifle I know just doesn't make sense, but that's the way I want to do this one.

The barrel is 1:8 twist. I want to shoot the heavier bullets to help buck the wind. I sent some 105 A-max's with the action for Stockade to load up and shoot. Then I found some 107 smk's. I know many people aren't fond of the Amax but heck it's slim pickens you gotta get what you can get and get two boxes of them at that - I'm ashamed to tell you what I have for primers.

Got the call today from UPS - they're coming tomorrow!!

Take care,
JLM
