new bullets

Have any of you guys had bad luck with these bonded plastic tip bullets? I shot two deer wiith the new sierra gamechanger 125 gr. 300 win. mag. Neither dropped or left a blood trail. You cant find a deer like that. I dont think they opened up at all. They were about 3350. Maybe too fast? Blowed the core out? Im going back to old interlocks. I saw hair fly off the shoulder on one of them so he wasnt hit too bad. Doug

I saw this with a friend of mine recently. He went back to the Nosler 125 gr. Accu-bond. Never had that happen with those.

I shoot the 90 gr in my 6 AI, taken many whitetail, mule and antelope with it, as well as countless coyotes ( one at 656 yards) easy to tune and load for. Curious though, why such a light round in the 300 win mag? I believe they make a 165 grain version. They are a traditional cup and core bullet. As you mentioned you may be pushing them too fast and they are blowing up on contact. I've run them for few years at 3500 FPS out of the 6mm AI and never had one blow up and they've all performed well with all deer except for one down on the spot. The 125 gr may be a totally different story.

I'm a big fan of bonded hunting bullets (used them for years). I haven't tried the Sierras you mentioned, but Woodleih, Swift, Hornady and Noslers have all performed as they should. I also don't use lite for caliber bullets when hunting. I use medium to "lite hvy".

I’m thinking I read something about the 120 grain 6.5 Gamechanger in a Grendel. At Grendel velocity it was said to work good for deer, at higher velocity it would be more like a varmint bullet. Thinking that a Grendel in that weight is 2400 ish.

Usually bullet manufacturers recommend minimum and maximum velocity for each bullet. . A 125 is an awfully light bullet to shoot out of a .300 Win mag. i have no experience with that bullet, but most 125s in .30 are designed for varmints. Just a thought.

That is pretty fast for any cup and core bullet, I think. I used to shoot 150 Ballistic Tip hunting bullets out of my 7 mm Rem Mag and had lots of them blow up. Very little penetration on big animals I shot, though I too was shooting them awfully fast.

I switched to 150 grain Barnes TTSX, then 140 TTSX - and now shoot the 120 TTSX as I don't hunt elk anymore. The 120's go faster in my 7 mag than the speed you are shooting, and they deliver great accuracy, speed and penetration. No problem with blood trails so far - all pass-thru shots.

Varget I used to shoot noslers I need to go back. I got that load from an old hornady manuel. Ive got a 257 weatherby ,3 swifts , 22-250 I dont judge distance too good. I dont like recoil. Thats why the light bullet. Doug

The 300 with 125s dont kick bad. Its a browning auto . 110 gr. barnes are better. Thanks for the replies guys. Could have been a loose nut on the stock but I dont think that was all of it. Doug

Depends on which “new” 125 TGK bullet you are talking about.

The original had a translucent tip and was “good for 308 W velocities”, 3200 fps if I remember correctly.

The newest version was redesigned for 300 Blackout, or more correctly to feed in an AR. It’s actually a shorter bullet and has a solid (vs see through) tip. I don’t no if max velocity changed.

Either way sounds like speed was the issue.

It just dawned on me why it dont kick too bad. Its got one of the old bosses on it. Its noisy but it dont bite you. Now you put some hot rod 180s or 200s in it different story. I dont think that gamechanger was designed for the blackout. These have a green tip. Doug

are you saying there is two deer wondering around wounded that will probably die a slow agonizing death? I hope another hunter will see them and make a humane kill.
