I have a Tikka 595, that has been used in XTC, F Class T/R and in informal matches. It has been chambered in 223 and 223 AI with throat lengths that generally favored 69 to 80.5 bullets.

Over the last couple years, I have been competing in our clubs 100 meter prone matches w/a rest and have shot a variety of bullet weights with good success on a very small X ring.

So, I’m looking to rebarrel this rifle, again in 223 Remington, with a barrel that will love the Berger 22 cal 52gr FB behind an easy to meter powder in Lapua cases.

What twist should I use, (1:14?)? Barrel length and how much freebore do I want for this bullet? I’ve looked at H335 and LT-32 as possible powders, I’m sure most would work in this burn rate class, but, if I had to pick one powder and never regret the choice, which one wins?

First is your tw rate. If not for absolute BR group competition, l would suggest a 12. If buttoned rifled, it can sometimes end up short. This allows some leeway there awa a new fandangle projo that may hit the market at 53.718 gr. and need the spin.
H335 can be a bit dirty if not pushed. I have no experience w the LT series.

I have had a lot of success with 12TW barrels, so I see no reason to get a 14. A 1.25" barrel 22" long in a BR contour would work. Bart's 52gr FB would be, and is, my choice. If reliable accuracy is on the menu, forget about ball powders. Benchmark would be first choice, N133 shot well at 24.2 to 24.6grs.

If all you'll shoot is 52's I'd get a good custom barrel in 14tw, have it chambered with very little to zero freebore, screw it on and go to town.

Benchmark is a really good powder in 223's for the middle weight 50 grainers so that would be a very good powder choice and it meters like water too.

Great replies, thanks. A 12 twist makes sense and gives me options on bullet weights.

Bart’s yes, Bart’s. I did get some 6mm heavies from him to test in the Berger drought. That would be a good idea to add to the mix.

What about freebore, none means what? Bullet engages the rifling immediately? or is there a bit of jump before? Benefit or detriment? I want to have a reamer made that would serve me down the road.

Freebore of .035 to .045. There's a bit of jump, but you can seat the bullets out close without having the base into the neck/shoulder area. I would also get some brass and see what the neck dia was and get a reamer based on how much neck turning you were inclined to do.

Talked to Dave Kiff, PT&G, he’s recommending a .253 no turn neck with .025 freebore. Should be just fine for my purposes.
