so if you only had 1200 $ to start with . where would you start ? i would to build on a tikka action buy thats 600 just for a action. rem 700 can be had for a few hundred bucks . I'm thinking maby 6.5x55 or 243 win ..not sure yet . or i could spend the money on having my 1in12 308 barrel chambered and installed . and maby order a blank for my 223.. how good are shilen pre fit barrels ?

My last "cheap" build was on a Rem 721 that I picked up for $300. Only change was a Holland bolt handle. A low round count Shilen select match in 6 AI was found on this forum, then dropped it in a Richard's stock. If I remember right, there's somewhere around $850 invested in the complete rifle.

wow thats not bad ! my local smith said he could get me in a rem 700 action trued , lugs lapped . shilen match heavy target barrel . in 243, 7mm08 , or any 6mm . with trigger job for about 1,100 $

Just look at pawn shops. Not sure where you are but www.backpage.com is another good place to look. In sporting goods. I've done a few and they are in the 800-1000 range minus scope. Savage can be done cheaper and easier.

Gotta agree with nastynate. If you go with a savage lots a places make prefit barrels. Buy the wrench for the nut, and a go gauge. You can build a barrel vise easy. I have put a few rifles together for less than 1,000. There are lots of used parts around and a ton of knowledge on this sight. Good luck

If your looking at shilen barrels, look at the barrel man. He has some really good prices. And if you decide to go with a savage he can accommodate you with a pre fit as well.

If savage I'd use www.gunshack.com
Ship fast and barrels shoot good. Have them in stock. I've also bought barrels from 3rdgss.com

Look at the new Tikka T3 CTR, euro optics has them.for $948 in 308 or 260. I have the T3 Sporter and you will not be disappointed with the T3 action or their factory (made by Sako) barrels.

Myself I am still undecided between a 243 or 6.5x55 T3 for silhouette shooting.

It also depends on what you want it for, what type of shooting and how many accessories you like to put on a rifle.
