New Build: 6BR/6BRX - Which barrel do I want

I have a three screw target action and my stock!

I am building a 6BR or 6BRX

I plan on shooting 105's - 107's

What barrel do I want to put on my build, I will be punching paper at 600yds.

And most of all, what brand barrel?

28", 29", or 30" barrel

7, 8, or 9 twist barrel

Is the BRX worth the extra effort, which I don't mind!

I would use a Krieger 8 twist and use a MTU contour at 28". I have three 6mmBR's in different barrel lengths and the Krieger barrels shoot the best.

For your use the BRX is not needed although the Dasher is a very nice "improved" 6mmBR and a great cartridge.

However I would stay with the 6mmBR due to Redding Competition Collet dies (the set with the body die) not being available for the Dasher.

I have both. The BRX is a great round and is worth the extra work. The 6BR and BRX work great 600 yds. The BRX will give the extra velocity for 1000 yds. You can run the speed, without the pressure.

I recomend 30"to 32" 1:8, Heavy palma barrels for the 6mmBRX.

The reason being you can acheive 3020-3080 fps with 31.5-32.5 grains of Varget. With a Magnum SRP. You barrel life should be 3200-3600 rounds w/o a setback. If yiou set back at
2000-2200 rounds you will get between 3800-4000 round out of a barrel.

Without question Varget is the best powder for the 6BRX.

If you use a shorter barrel you will have to use 4350, to acheive and maintain velocity.

Read John708 post on the 6mmBRX. He has shotout 5 barrels now and have in excess of 15,000 rounds of experience.

+1 on the BRX. I have a Kreiger MTU 28" on a savage 2 screw action. Just an amazing shooting rig with 32.5 of Varget and 108 Bergers.

DennisH,

I just did a new Kreiger 8.5 tw 26". My best barrel was a 27". I will not pay extra for barrel length. And they shoot best in the 26" range, and in the 2975 f/s range.

What is a redding competition collet die? Never heard of it.

They make a type s bushing die in either neck or full length, and a competition type s neck die. All will work backed off .098"-.100".

Lee is the only ones I know of that make a "collet" die.

Someone makes one for a belted magnum, can't think of their name.

I'd go with the BRX, here's why. I got looking at some of my 6BR 600yd scores and noticed every once in a while a 9 would sneak out. Maybe it was me or maybe the wind caught me either way I got to thinking if I had another 100fps that 9 would have been a wide 10.

If you dont already have a plain old 6br do yourself a favor and get one. Lots of info available for the 6br and no brass hassles. No fire forming no nothing unless you want to turn the necks and i wouldnt even do that! If your not going to dedicate yourself to 600 or 1000 yard benchrest then dont bother with the 6br improved chamberings. there realy no need. the dasher or BRX will gain you about 100fps but thats it. No gain in accuracy and possibly a loss if you dont have the proper dies. Tell you smith that your going to buy a set of redding 6br dies and ask him if he has a reamer that he thinks will be a good match for the dies and go to work. The plain old 6BR is a great cartridge and i would just about bet a dollar you wont miss the extra 100FPS anyway. Keep it simply if your going to play simple!! Just my 1 cents worth. Have fun and shoot often!! Lee

DennisH,

The first 6BRX I did, was to punch a 6BR barrel. The 6BR was running only 2800 f/s. After punching, it would run 3025 f/s, but liked 2975 f/s. Each barrel is different, some guys are getting close to 3000 f/s with a 6BR. The best I have got was 2900 f/s from a BR.

jr600yd: The wind issue is the main reason I'm trying the 6BRX. One of our match's is fired at meter distances, and at 500 ( 547 yds) I've had hits that should not have been where they were in windy conditions. Hoping the little extra velocity will off-set at least some of that factor.

I have a 6br and am very happy with it but am in the process of two 6brx rigs one for me and one for my son. I will be doing mostly 1000 yd shooting so the added fps will bound to help a little. Regular dies turned out a .100 is suppose to work fine but I don't want to mess with it, I called Neil Jones and he can build a set of dies for it so thats what I will do. I wanted @ least a 30" tube but waited to long and wouldn't be able to get it done in time for the season to start so I found two 29" Kreiger tubes @ Bruno's I won't know until after all is bought and I am @ the range if it was all worth it, but that's why I am into this sport, to have FUN and experiment with new ideas, and the commendatory of fellow shooters with the same interests as me. Larry Willis make the Magnum Collet die you mentioned DCRYDER.

How about a bump/neck die for the 6BRX?
