New Barrel ?

Hello Everyone,

I am thinking about getting a custom barrel for my Rem. 700 in 7mm Rem Mag. I would appreciate any suggestions on any custom barrel companys, and also any experiences with them. I am building this rifle for long range big game hunting, and really would like for it to at least shoot .5 moa.

Thanks,

K9jones

I have a Satern cut rifled barrel. This barrel was shipped to me in the time I had been told, which was two to three weeks. It is available in either Stainless or Chrome Moly, and they do cut rifle only in a five groove configuration. This has been one of the best barrels that I have ever worked with! It broke in easily, and is the easiest cleaning barrel that I have on any of my actions. You can check them out at www.saternmachining.com and call them at 712-362-4991.

Cordially,
Bob Blaine

I am currently using Lilja, Krieger, and Mike Rock barrels. All of the companies were great to work with and they all shoot better than I can. There are many others available too. the lead times can be an issue if you are in a hurry. Narrow you choices down by the features you want and make a few calls.

Good luck with your new project,

Greg

I have quite a few Pac-Nors of my own and have put on a lot of others for friends.
They have always been more than ready to help out, and they all seem to shoot really good.

+ 1 on the Satern. Haven't used them personaly but know those who have, and with great results. I've got 2 on "order" right now.

K9Jones:

There are more quality barrel makers out there today than ever before. Once you buy a quality barrel you need a quality gunsmith to cut, turn, thread, chamber, head space/fit, install and chrown your new barrel.

Are you looking for a stainless barrel or a chrome molly barrel that will need to be polished and blued?

I suggest you get several quotes, and talk with several references.

Hey there K9jones - I've got a Krieger on my SWAT rifle, and another Krieger on my long-range match rifle. They are cut-rifle barrels and typically are very accurate.

The 7mm Rem mag is one of my all time favorite hunting cartridges and I've taken game up to a big 6x6 bull elk with it. I'd recommend no less than a 24" barrel to get magnum level velocity. If you're building a long-range rifle, you may be prepared for the rifle to be heavier than the standard sporter-weight hunting rifle - if so, consider a 26" tube with a varmint or target contour. You'll get plenty of velocity and fine accuracy.

With the 7mm Rem mag, a 1:9 twist will stabilize Sierra's 175 grain SPBT Gameking, which is an excellent long-range hunting bullet. The 160 grain bullets also work real well at longer ranges.

Best of luck with the project! Regards, Guy

I HAVE A KRIEGER ON MY 375 H&H, WITH 260 NOSLER ACCUBONDS 3/4 INCH REGULARLY IT SHOOTS BETTER THAN MY 30-06 WITH A PAC-NOR. I AM VERY HAPPY WITH BOTH BARRELS, BUT THE KRIEGER CLEANS UP BETTER. MY NEW 6BR WILL HAVE A LILJA. CAN'T SEE YOU GOING WRONG WITH ANY OF THE BIG 4,HART, KRIEGER, PACNOR, LILJA)

"CAN'T SEE YOU GOING WRONG WITH ANY OF THE BIG 4,HART, KRIEGER, PACNOR, LILJA)"

I can't imagine a list of major barrel mfg that included PacNor and Lilja but not Shilen?????

My apologies for not listing Shilen, They have always been known as a quality barrel along with the Douglas. I own 1 in a .270 Win. For some reason the 4 I previously mentioned seem to jump to the lead in recent days. I don't believe you could go wrong with any current barrel maker, some are better than others in specific things,ie ease of cleaning)and other things

I'm no expert shooter, But this is what I like in barrels, but not in this order and what I have had experince with . Hart, Douglass, Broughton, Kreiger, Shilen. The Kreiger don't shoot like I think it should, BUT I THINK IT IS BCCAUSE OF THE GUNSMITH, so I'm not chopping on Kreiger. And I'm not a gunsmith I'm just saying that the four that I chamberer, shoot better than than the one that I didn't chamber, so I going to take the Kreiger off and rechamber it and see what happens. And one thing I can say Hart barrels are the easiest to clean and I have three of them . Art
