New Barrel Break-In

Broke-in my new PacNor barrel this weekend. It's a 28", 8 twist, 6mmBR with a .085 freebore mounted to a Savage action pillar mounted in a Stockade long range stock. The image shows the 36th through 40th round through the barrel. I'm shooting 87gr V-max over 31.0gr of Varget in virgin Lapua brass with Federal 205 primers. Bullet is seated just at the lands. As you can see from the 200 yd target, I'll need a little tuning up on load and bullet seating but over all not a bad start. Barrel exhibited very little blue throughout the process and cleans up very well.

Sounds like a good start. I haven't had the greatest luck with the 87 V-Max from my Pac-Nor barrel, compared to other bullets), but I know some folks swear by them.

BTW, I'm impressed that you managed to upload a .pdf file, but it's really much easier to upload a .GIF or .JPEG and it saves us some bandwidth. Also a gif or jpeg will automatically appear as a thumbnail, making it easier for readers.

Here's your pic:

Thanks for the pic help Moderator. I actually tried to upload a jpg file but it was rejected, too large.

You say the 87V-Max is not doing as well in your barrel, what bullet,s)are you having the best luck with?

105 Scenars, 90gr Bergers, 88 Bergers, and 80gr Fowlers all go into tight little knots--But I jam all of those about .015". It may be that the V-max like to be jumped. I've only tried them in a couple groups because the 105s shot so well.

Re photo files. It's a good thing to crop your original scan to 600x400 if you want to attach it. That will keep file size well under 100kb and the attachment tool should work fine.

Irfanview is free software that will crop and resize photos very easily. www.irfanview.com and then click on the "Download" link.

Interesting that you've not had the best luck with the 87 V-Max in your PacNor. They were one of the original selection of bullets I bought to use for LR varminting in my 6BR Improved Ubls, but I've yet to work enough with them to find out if they'll perform in my 8-twist Kriegers or Broughton 5C. My loads with 105/107 bullets use around 34grs. of Varget or 35 of N150 - since I've got a full 8lb. jug of H4895, wonder if it'd be suitable for use with 85-87gr. bullets?

I need to try your load for the 87g vmax. I ordered 1000 of them and they will just not shoot in my gun.
