I decided in mid-June that I wanted to try my hand at building an F class rifle in 6 BRA caliber. Alex Wheeler was very helpful in getting me started. Alex suggested a BAT action and an 8-twist Bartlein barrel. I purchased an action listed on the Forum Marketplace which KW Precision forwarded to Alex for barrel installation and tuning of the fire control.
At nearly same time, I contacted Jason Avila who helped me spec out one of his Wheeler F-Open stocks. Jason obtained the action dimensions digitally from BAT and sent me a ~95% inletted stock in early-July fitted with a RAD recoil device. I ground the RAD to fit the exterior dimensions of the stock and started sanding and sealing the stock before the action arrived. I received the barreled action in mid-September and did the final fitting of the action to the stock, pillar bedding and finishing with clear coat. Jason gave me some good advice on pillar bedding and Brett kindly gave me a number of pointers on sanding and finishing. I was done right before leaving on vacation in early October.
Alex had already coached me on how to start reloading the 6BRA cartridge. After my return, I waited impatiently while UPS lost the required neck bushings but, once I had those, I loaded up a spread of powder charges using Peterson Brass hydroformed by DJ.
This week I've tested three different bullets at 100 yards and all of them have shot very well. I was impressed with how well the stock tracks. My plan is to test at 500 yards next week. Anyway, here are some pictures of the results. I am very grateful to everyone who helped me on this project and very happy with the result!
