New 6.5x284 project

I've been thinking Orange Crush needs a big brother for those super long shot's that are too much for the 6BR, so it's time to start collecting the parts for a new long range build. I am wanting a HEAVY rifle for 800 to 1500 yard varmint kills, and to shoot in the heavy gun class on occasion. I was originally going to go with a 300 WSM. However, I have decided to go with a 6.5x284 Shehane w/.290 tight neck. I know the 300 WSM has better barrel life, but the 6.5x284 is better ballistic ally, has less recoil, better brass, and is cheaper to reload. I know, I will have to set the barrel back after every 1000 to 1200 rounds but the 6.5x284 is worth it. That's why I am going with a 30' barrel, that will get me two set backs and still leave me with a 27' to 28' barrel after the second set back. My good friend is an AWESOME smith, so I will not have any problems with getting it done quickly.

The 6.5x284 Shehane will run a 139grn Scenar,.615 BC) or 140grn Berger VLD,.618 BC) at 3050fps to 3100fps out of a 30' barrel. As long as I clean it regularly and take time in between shoots, it should get close to 1200 rounds before I need to do a set back. I owned a 6.5x284 a couple of years ago and I miss it. Back than I was shooting a 139grn Scenar, out of a 29' barrel, at 3130fps and it was freakin unbelievably accurate at a 1000 yards. My best 5 shot group with that rifle was a .075 group at 100 yards. I ended up selling that rifle because I fell on hard times and I have regretted it ever since.

Here are the specs, let me know if you guys have any suggestions;

1. 6.5x284 Shehane .290 Tight Neck Match Chamber for Lapua brass throated for 139grn Scenar and 140grn bullets.

2. Action-Stiller Python 1.650 Diameter, Right Bolt/Right Port w/built in scope base, color is the Black Anodized finish.

3. Barrel-Bartlein 30', 1-8.5 Twist, 5R, 1.450 STRT Cylinder w/6 Flutes.

4. Stock-McMillan Tooley MBR w/3 lbs lead added to rear, color 80%Black, 10%White, 10%Grey.

5. Jewel Trigger.

6. Vais Muzzle Brake.

7. Stiller 30mm 20MOA Offset rings.

8. Weight will be around 30 to 35 lbs with Nightforce NXS scope. It should be real stable on the bags and perfect for those super long shots.

Let me know what you guys think?

6BR, that sounds like one hell of a rifle, but a lot of hassels with the throat not lasting but 1000 rounds. I'm having a 7wsm done at this time throated for 162 A-max 6+ BC running them out of a 28' Broughton 1/9 attatched to a Stiller Pred. My QL program shows that I should be able to get 3200 fps with IMR 7828ssc with a very nice long slow pressure curve hopefully preserving the throat for close to 2000 rounds before setback. Hopefully I'll have it in time for the Hickory shoot.
Good luck with your build

Thanks for the info. I think I am going to stick with the 6.5x284, because I had good luck with my last one. I know barrel life is not great, but I will have a 30' barrel and that will allow for many set backs. Plus, my good Friend is a excellent gunsmith so I will be able to get it done pretty quick. I am going to buy my own reamer so that will help too.

Instead of a 6.5x.284, why not look at the original, a 6.5x55. For vermin I use 100gr bullets at 3200fps. 125gr to 2900fps. 129gr for larger game to 2900fps and have a 8000 round barrel life. I bet a 30' barrel would add 100fps over a 21'. I use a 1962 Husqvarna 6.5x55 Model 1600 for 300 yard work, it is set up as a hunter, so my scope choice limits the range. I also use an original M41b Swede sniper for out to 600 yards, it will go further, but I have no need of that type of range. The M41b has an original Zeiss Ajack 1938 4x90 that it was issued with. German optics w/ Swede precision, cant beat it. If you want speed, build a 6.5-.06 or 6.5 Win Mag. The 6.5x55 and 6.5x.284 have similar ballistics. I think someone is yanking your chain.

hello I'm new in the forum i need help with reloading 6.5 x 285 Norma i reload .308 and 300 win mag i cant get no info on 6.5x284norma what kind of dies everything is 6.5x284 Winchester

6BR,

How about the 6.5x55 improved? I happen to have a brand new PT&G reamer and 300 rounds of RWS brass available. LOL

The Berger 140 VLD you refer to has a bit lower BC than stated. It is their 140 BT that has the 618 BC.

max case length 2.170 cut at 2.160 w/h4350 48.5 grain f-210m
sierra 142 gr match king aprox 2950 fps Norma cases is this one of the best loads for 6.5 x 284 Norma if it is i will be testing next Friday can you guys take a look at this load thanks

I think the original proposal will be great. Stick with the 6.5 - 284, its no concidence that the US F-Class team opted for this calibre - 'it gets the job done' as the Captain said. And with what you're spending on the whole project, barrel costs are a small part. Best of luck with it.

6BR,
Was the first barrel a Bartlein also? Having issues with a Rock so was thinking about going back to a Krieger but maybe I should try a Bartlein. Was it a tight bore?
