I've been thinking Orange Crush needs a big brother for those super long shot's that are too much for the 6BR, so it's time to start collecting the parts for a new long range build. I am wanting a HEAVY rifle for 800 to 1500 yard varmint kills, and to shoot in the heavy gun class on occasion. I was originally going to go with a 300 WSM. However, I have decided to go with a 6.5x284 Shehane w/.290 tight neck. I know the 300 WSM has better barrel life, but the 6.5x284 is better ballistic ally, has less recoil, better brass, and is cheaper to reload. I know, I will have to set the barrel back after every 1000 to 1200 rounds but the 6.5x284 is worth it. That's why I am going with a 30' barrel, that will get me two set backs and still leave me with a 27' to 28' barrel after the second set back. My good friend is an AWESOME smith, so I will not have any problems with getting it done quickly.
The 6.5x284 Shehane will run a 139grn Scenar,.615 BC) or 140grn Berger VLD,.618 BC) at 3050fps to 3100fps out of a 30' barrel. As long as I clean it regularly and take time in between shoots, it should get close to 1200 rounds before I need to do a set back. I owned a 6.5x284 a couple of years ago and I miss it. Back than I was shooting a 139grn Scenar, out of a 29' barrel, at 3130fps and it was freakin unbelievably accurate at a 1000 yards. My best 5 shot group with that rifle was a .075 group at 100 yards. I ended up selling that rifle because I fell on hard times and I have regretted it ever since.
Here are the specs, let me know if you guys have any suggestions;
1. 6.5x284 Shehane .290 Tight Neck Match Chamber for Lapua brass throated for 139grn Scenar and 140grn bullets.
2. Action-Stiller Python 1.650 Diameter, Right Bolt/Right Port w/built in scope base, color is the Black Anodized finish.
3. Barrel-Bartlein 30', 1-8.5 Twist, 5R, 1.450 STRT Cylinder w/6 Flutes.
4. Stock-McMillan Tooley MBR w/3 lbs lead added to rear, color 80%Black, 10%White, 10%Grey.
5. Jewel Trigger.
6. Vais Muzzle Brake.
7. Stiller 30mm 20MOA Offset rings.
8. Weight will be around 30 to 35 lbs with Nightforce NXS scope. It should be real stable on the bags and perfect for those super long shots.
