New 20 VarTarg

I put this 20 VarTarg together over the last year and just got it chambered a few weeks ago. Took it out yesterday to fire form some brass. I will post the target below. This should be a sage rat killing machine out to 400 to 500 yards.

BAT SV Action
McMillan hunter class BR stock
Jewell 1 lb trigger
Krieger 12 twist
PTG reamer .232 neck
Sightron 8-32x SIII LRTD/TDT scope
Lapua .221 Fireball brass...neck turned to about 0.0125
32 gr Zmax and 35 gr Bergers

BAT 20 VT Fireform 12-29-16 2.jpg This is the fire form and barrel break in target. I cleaned it just a few times during break in because the barrel did not copper up at all, but I think it did screw up the first few groups. I also took a break to run the rifle down a few benches to run it over a chronagraph and got velocity readings of 3699, 3720 and 3721. 18.5 grains of H4198 and 32 grain Zmax bullets.

These are fire form loads with about as much powder I could get in the virgin case and the bullets jammed into the lands. This rifle shows the same accuracy promise as my other BAT/Krieger rifles in 6BR and 6PPC.

I LIKE........Oh yeah. :D

My reamer is .2335, probably just a smidge on cleanup on Lapua or Dakota - I haven't used it yet, opinion?

Very nice! The 20VT will reach out that far too,I know:)
Built a very similar rifle in 20Duster on BAT SV#8,love it.
Enjoy it,great shooting.
Matt

20 VT is one of the most inherently accurate small caliber cartridge there is. It is also one of the most loved, at least by those that have owned one.

200 Lapua cases and almost all of them had a flat spot on the necks. I'm glad I was able to turn them down to make them uniform, but not sure it will matter. I think your .2335 reamer will be fine. I don't run much neck clearance and only keep doing that because it worked in my Cooper 20VT. If you turn yours to .013 or so you should be perfect.

I like the fact you have the hill in the background. A couple of my fields, which look almost exactly like that with the mounds of sage rat dirt, have a hill for a backdrop, but my best field doesn't and we have to be a little more careful. Just a few more months and the first snow kills should get started!

I usually start in January, they are already out in No. Cali Here is a pic from Jan 10th 2015 for the "non believers" I would love to tell you where I shoot but ,,,,honey holes are hard to find. I like your new rifle and plan to have a 20 VT soon as well. Enjoy
They let us shoot the Almond orchards all year in the Sacramento Valley area. Bigger squirrels, not to be confused with Grey squirrels like our eastern shooters have.

Getting harder and harder to find fields with an abundance of rats where the ranchers welcome you with open arms instead of a request for money. I've been using Google Earth to find the fields with the dirt piles that indicate lots of rats.

I used to hunt those squirrels in the woods in Southern Oregon...we called them digger squirrels. But something happened and the numbers dropped. Never was a bunch of them but it sure was fun driving the logging roads hunting them.

"Almond Joy got nuts, Mounds don't!"

This is one of my favorite fields. They poisoned it last spring with a new stuff that was about 90% effective. I went shooting after the poisoning and found it surprisingly relaxing and enjoyable. And it was much easier on my barrels. jd
