New 17 HMR ammo..HOT, HOT, HOT

Has anyone tried the new A-17 Ammo from CCI that's made for the new Savage semi auto? It's regularly doing over 2700 f.p.s. and when it hits the target, or squirrel/prairie dog, the resulting pop is what I had originally hoped for from this round. Try this ammo out. You won't be disappointed in anything except possibly the price.

Dan, how is the accuracy? I haven't had a chance to try this ammo yet but it's my list. Been playing around the 17 wsm and accurizing the b mag to see if I can get one of these things to shoot (out of the box .75"-1.5" groups at 50 yards lol!).

Is this ammo to be used specifically in the semi-auto? Can "regular" .17 HMR ammo like Hornday V-Max ammo be used in the semi-auto? Thanks

I just shot some A17 side by side with regular CCI 17gr in my anshutz 1727f. I did not chronograph it, but the A17 was clearly more accurate in this rifle. I'll be buying more.

Good luck with that 17 WSM..

I had one that I put in a bedded stock and added a Shilen heavy SS barrel. Best was still 1" to 2" at 100 yards on a dead calm day. My marlin 17 HMR would eat it alive.
The rifle is not at fault though. I turned my attention to the ammo. I had 11 boxes and started pulling bullets measuring and weighing everything.
Results:
Loaded round: 1 to 3 Gr variation.
Powder: Some as much as .1 to .3 Gr. variation. This small case simply cannot shoot with that variation.
Priming compound in some was smeared 30% up the inside case wall.
I contacted Winchester - NO REPLY.
I contacted Hornady to see if they were planning to make the ammo.. They said NO
CCI, same answer...

I NO LONGER OWN THE RIFLE !!!

Got it to shoot 1/2" or less at 50 yards and I totally agree, the ammo is what will determine accuracy. Hornady just released ammo for the wsm but I do not have any yet. I do have a good lot of Winchester ammo that was putting groups of .2's-.3's at 50 after accurizing the b mag. Got two ruger 77/17 wsm's coming so I'll see what I can do with those. I'll definitely be getting my hands on the Hornady ammo just to try even though I'm positive it's all made by the same company just packaged in different branded box. I'm gonna try weight sorting the ammo!

OP talked of hot HMR not WSM...

The new 17 HMR ammo spoken of is designed (or should I say the Savage semi-auto) is designed for that particular ammo. It has to do with matching peak pressures, and the manner in which/time in which it drops off peak to properly TIME the action for opening and working correctly. Kind of like a retarded blow-back system. Lighter powered rounds in that rifle are not going to properly time it.

I think there was a video of the rifle here on the home page...check articles maybe??

It shot pretty good out of my 1727. Not as good as the guns favorite ammo but really close. Probably .3" 5 shot groups at 50 yards. But it is hotter. If you shoot some Hornady 17 gr HMR right after the A-17 you will notice how weak the Hornady loads are in comparison.

I shot it in a CZ 453 and an Annie 17P. The CZ used to like the 20gr game points and the Annie, 17Vmax. In both guns, accuracy improved slightly with the A17 rounds. On the agenda is to chrono all for comparison.

Has anyone else gotten a FTF with this ammo? I had three FTF's over the weekend. Never had that problem before.

Yes in the CZ, no in the Annie. I rotated them and they did go the second time.

Just had 3 ftf's with the regular cci 17hmr in my marlin this weekend. Never happened with any other ammo in that gun. Haven't tried it in my cz yet.

I had no FTF in Bolt Action Savage but I will say the turtles hate them....Man I go out fishing and always end up just shooting red eared sliders you run out of ammo way before you do turtles but there is always tomorrow.

Someone said the A17 ammo was made exclusively for the new Savage A17 rifle and I'm sure it was indeed made for the introduction of the gun and it probably will operate the blow back delay system better than standard 17HMR ammo but the gun will also function on regular 17HMR ammo. I just looked at a new Savage A17 gun and it is clearly stamped A17 17HMR on the barrel.

I just tried the A17 ammo today in my 1517 Anschutz and it did not group nearly as well as the TNT ammo this gun likes. I think it may be more the V-Max bullet it does not like more than the higher velocity.

I bought 400 rounds of A17 for ~ $110. Tested it for accuracy today with no wind. Consistant 5/8 groups.. Might be able to do better if I had young eyes.. I posted above in the other A17 post as well.. Good stuff. I'll be buying more, soon as I use up all the Hornaday I have.

I also have a 1517, the MPR stainless version, and oddly enough even though the Annie 17P pistol shot better with the A17, the 1517 did not. It still likes the Vmax the best. Some chrono info on both rounds. Series 1 is the 17Vmax and Series 2 is the A17. Both shot in the MPR, Magnetospeed chrono.

This is good ammo in general. It shoots a good 150 fps faster and the accuracy while not the best is right up there. Definitely hunting accuracy. Hopefully this will get the other manufacturers to start making some better, faster more accurate 17 HMR ammo. This proves there is room for improvement in the current 17 HMR ammo. Bring it on.
