New 1000yd .223 Build

I just finished putting together a .223 to use in our 1000yd matches at Rayners and thought you guys might like a look. I know that a .223 is not a fantastic thousand yard rifle but the guys that I shoot with decided that they would like to have a .223 1000 yard shoot, and besides that I also figured it would make a heck of a good ground hog rifle so it's kind of a win-win situation for me. It is a Savage Target Action, 7Finger Gen-I Chassis with a used 1:7 twist Savage barrel that I got from a buddy and Bushnell optics.

7fingers I'm interested to hear how you do. I'm going to try mine at 1000yds in s couple of weeks. I've only shot it at 600 yd matches and I have a hard enough time with, 1000 should be interesting!

Mine is shooting real well at 600 with 75's. I have 80's but the twist may be a little slow. I put this together for 600 max. Good luck at 1000, hope it works for you, let us know.

Looks good. Man, some of you guys are taking this stuff pretty seriously. You need a brake on that thing ;D
I'm just going to run one of my AR15s with 69 grainers at a little over 3,000 fps.

7fingers,

I have a 223AI setup on a Savage also. 8tw shooting the same load, 80 and Varget. I have shot it in a local steel match out to 1060 yds. does very well.

I have been shooting the 223 in f class in Canada its a great cartridge with 90gr bergers at 2750 using varget
if you spend time on brass, neck turned , primer pockets uninformed. must use a good electronic scale.
it will run with any .308 win wind drift is same as .308 berger 185gr the 200 + are better in wind.
I fired a 15 shot 2 sighters on a very nice evening at Connaught at 900 m no wind shot a 75 with 12 v bulls thats 15 shots in 10" and 12 of those in 5"
A must is pointing your bullets.
I use the 80.5 and JLK 80 with varget at 2975 fps for 300 to 600 in good conditions if wind is bumpy I use the 90s
got to love the 223

I have found powders that will drive 80 & 90 much faster than Varget like VT540 550 and very accurate as well.
But double base powders will cause problems in Heat on the dog days of summer, and they are much harder on the
throats way more firecracking.

Benchmark & H4895 could work okay worth a try and the are both extreem powders

7fingers, have you had a chance to wring out your new rifle?
I am just starting to build an AR in .223 for 1,000 for the fun of it. Will use a 1:8 for versatilty vs. a dedicated 1:6.5 for 90s.

Built myself a 223AI on a M700 w/26" Krieger 1-7tw in sendero contour; put it in a McM A5 stock with Jewell HVR, 20MOA sloped scope rail, and Vortex Viper PST 6-24x50. I used DBM with AICS polymer 10rd mags, and it just so happened that Berger 90VLDs seated as long as possible to work in these mags shoot great at that OAL. We shoot steel practical/tactical matches out to 1400yds, and this rifle has been a lot of fun to use in this venue.

1st time out with this rifle, I ran out of internal elevation while dialing up from 1300 to 1400. Used the reticle to hold over an additional 5 MOA, and got one hit for two shots fired at 1400. Even though Applied Ballistics app showed the 90s going transonic around 1200yds, elevation come-ups were dead on using a cheat sheet printout generated by that program.

Last time I chrono'd my 90VLD load, avg vel was 2830fps. The rifle really likes the Berger 90s - I've shot several 5"/5-shot groups with it at 1000yds.
