New 10-10 scales

Hi Folks. I have been shipped three new RCBS 10-10 scales in the last two months to tune. They each came from different customers. All of them were made in Mexico. They are the work of trolls. They are not tunable nor do they repeat their zero readings. While I have tuned many 10-10s from years past, they were all made in New Jersey. I can not work on the current 10-10s. Furthermore, I simply can not recommend them to anyone.

good to know...... What do you recommend as the most accurate and consistent beam scale for loading at the range.
Thanks

Scott,
That is good to know as pmarauder said and like wise what scale would you suggest we replace the 1010 with if needed? I have another 304 Ohaus can you tune that for me and what might it cost? thank you for your time and for the info also.
Wayne.

I would say the value of the older scales just went up in value! I was recently offered an old one for a reasonable price. I'm going to see if he still has it.

I recommend a Lyman/Ohaus M5. They tune up to be very consistent and sensitive to a single kernel.

That's very interesting. A couple months ago I ordered a 1010 from Midway and when it arrived I could not get it to zero at all. I don't know if it was made in Mexico, but it was junk. I never did weigh a single charge with it. I packed it up and sent it back to Midway. Then I started looking for an alternative new scale and found this site and info about Scott Parker's tuned scales. I just received a tuned Redding scale from Scott this week and have loaded about 80 rounds with it. It is a pleasure to use and I recommend it. Thanks Scott!

Anybody know how to tell them apart (Mexico vs. New Jersey)?

I've got one a couple of years old with molded in NJ on the underside. I haven't used it since a bought a sparker tuned Redding last summer.

Scott,

I have one that on the bottom indicates "Mfg by Ohaus Scale Corp Florham Park, NJ USA" so I am assuming it is not one of the Mexico one's you have seen. If so, would you be willing to work on it?

Are the one's from Mexico marked from Mexico?

Thanks

Steve

Thanks for getting this thread started scott,
guys,
Unfortunately i am one of those three scales scott got in the mail recently. got it for a christmas present and was waiting to get it to him when i had the money. i thought the 10-10 was the standard in beam scales and that scott's work would make it better. i am going to get a scale from scott and the "imported" one back. i will then call RCBS and see what they say. i will also contact Midway and let them know that there is a difference in quality from the New Jersey and imported 10-10s. i dont know how far i will get, but i will post my progress. Scott is a great guy to deal with, and has been very helpful. But i am disappointed that RCBS would let this quality fall off.
cheers,
doc

I guess Im at a total loss here..?? What does "tuning" acually do for a 1010.?? and what is involved in "tuning" a 1010..???

send those scales back to RCBS... they pretty good honoring their products
they have in the past...........

.
i have a Ohaus 10-10 i purchased in 1983...it works perfect never needed tuning 2 yrs ago i felt the need to buy a 750 RCBS thought i was upgrading Ha !...
i set my powder dropper with my 10-10 an check everything on the 750.. in all these yrs the 10-10 hasn't failed me yet
the 10 10 actually gets most of the use
keeping the scale clean .. cover on when done.. dust the pivits now end then..... it'll probably out live me
guess i got lucky i bought the Ohaus back at that time... :)

Scott is a good guy. I was having a problem with a Redding #2 and he straightened it right out.

Unfortunately, a beam scale is a bit too hard on these older eyes, so I sold it and got Sartorius GD503.

i dont think thats the only thing rcbs is flubbing up on, i had a rcbs rockchucker last year that i bought brand new that had a tilt of the ram at full lift! what a pain in the arse to get that one replaced!

Well...I guess I stay in the dark then???? Guess I'll have to stick with my "working perfectly" 10-10 and my ChargeMaster????

Sorry Sully. I'm just getting to this. Basically, I make beam scales more sensitive and repeatable. This involves several steps: leveling the scale body, honing the beam knives, adjusting the pan mass and correcting for linearity.

I have one of those universal hand primers that insists on denting the primers. They sent me new internals , which i installed and it only made it worse. It is going to the scrap heap.

Bill,
It wasn't the internals that were bad the shell holder doesn't sit true to the rod, I have had the same problem with there priming tools and not the new ones either. I think to get a quality priming tool you have to spend the money to get one and so far I have not found a single one other then single feed tools that are any good. I have Sinclair single feed tools that are good and would like to try the 21st century single feed. As for the Mexican made 1010's I hope RCBS went cheap as IMO most of there stuff is and not Ohaus! Another words I hope they went with a cheap knock off from Mexico instead of Ohaus producing cheaper stuff for there customers
