This is not a reload its a factory 223 round I shot today. I pull the trigger it makes a noise like a cap gun and lots of smoke comes out the hole in the side of the receiver. I wait 30 seconds and nothing. I pull the case out and the bullet is still in the case and the primer looks like it exploded.

I shook the case and I feel powder in there and I weighed the round and it weighs the same as another unfired round. Only thing I can think is the case has no flash hole? I did not rip it apart I am leaving it as is until I talk to the manufacturer about it.

I've shot some of their 223 vmax ammo in the past without issues, however I later found that about 1 in 10 had off center flash holes. The stuff shot sub moa in a few 223's for me.

glad nothing else happened!
G.F.L. i get it LOL!
never heard if them? take a few pics and take the primer out and fill us in

I've seen primers seated like that in Aussie military ammunition way back. Seems that two opposite sides of the primer caught on the pocket, pulling them outwards & that caused the two edges at 90 degrees to them to curl under.

Never seen anybody who has managed to fire one. Accept my pat on the back.

The ammo is Fiocchi 55gr vmax. We have shot tons of this ammo in the 40gr vmax version without any issue before. It has always shot well and been consistent. Trying then 55gr version for more bullet weight for yotes. I am still going to give them a call and see what they say.

I'm leaning with the seated sideways crowd. It looks like the anvil legs flattened out and the priming compound fired out to the right. The flash hole is sealed off with primer cup brass.

You will answer most of your questions as to what was wrong, by pulling the bullet and removing the primer, first off, and then go from there.

I've been shooting the Fiocchi 50g v-max's for a few years and never had a problem. One in a couple thousand... not bad.

On another note, I have also been reloading the GLF brass for as long as I have been shooting the Fiocchi 50g v-max's, and I throw away maybe a quarter of the brass because of the off center primer holes. For me that's not a big deal, it's free brass and it's fire formed. I have bent one depriming pin, so easy does it when depriming, if it doesn't line up, toss it. I reload up to 4 times before I chuck the stuff. I still have about 300 pieces of once fired brass and after this trip to Alturas to help the farmers and ranchers with the Belding's ground squirrel problem..... I hope to have another 300-500 pieces of brass for reloading.

I had a guy give me about 500 rds of some 5.56 stamped brass before I remember the head stamp as some sort of crosshair with a circle around it thing and the 5.56 , complete shit some of the flash holes where almost to the edge of the pocket. I think I have a few pieces that did not go to the scrap yard . If I find it I'll post it up here.

I have seen that exact thing often when my teaching at my agency before retiring, we would go through 10,000 rds or so in a week. I saw about one of those each week with remington bulk 55 fmj. If you disassemble the round it has a flash hole/powder.....if you look carefully you can see that the primer is sideways, I have also seen the primer in upside down as well as some that didn't have a primer or hole at all, just a dimple where the primer should have been, bullets in upside down........... bulk ammo has its issues.

I'm going with the seated sideways crowd as well. it happens. I used to get an upside down every once in a while until I figure it out. when I looked at all the primers to make sure they where facing up, one had already made it's way into the next to be seated position. now I always hold the tray at the appropriate angle. live and learn as they say.
