need your help, .308 winchester

hey guys, i have been reloading for a while now, and i think that i have gotten the hang of things, but i am having trouble comming up with a load for my savage. its a pre-accutrigger 110 savage long action. a 24' 1/10 twist heavy conture savage takeoff bought from SSS.com. it will group well with 150 gr winchester fmj. around 3/4 inch at 100 yards. also, federal soft points will do under an inch as well. my handloads are averaging 2 inches. this is not sopposed to be. i dont have any of my data in front of my right now, but i will try yo get back on later with specifics. for powders, i have tried H4895, Varget and IMR4064. i am using 150 hornady SST and 168 A-MAX's. i am using load data out of the new hornady manuel, and noslers 6th edition. i was wondering if you guys new if these powders and bullet combonations are good, and maybe a good starting recipe if you wouldnt mind. im just getting frustrated that factory ammo is outshooting my handloads.

also, is there any way to get factory ammo recipies from the big companys, or is that un-obtainable.

thanks for all the help, brian

HEY BRIAN, ALL THINGS BEING EQUAL YOU SHOULD BE ABLE TO PRODUCE MORE ACCURATE LOADS THAN FACTORY. YOUR POWDER-BULLET COMBOS SOUND GOOD. THERE ARE ANY NUMBER OF ISSUES THAT COULD BE CAUSING YOUR PROBLEMS FROM A BAD DIE OR PRESS PROBLEM ALL THE WAY TO TECHNIQUES AND EVEN PRIMER CHOICE. MY ADVICE IS TO TAKE ONE THING AT A TIME AND MAKE SURE YOU ARE PAYING CLOSE ATTENTION TO DETAILS. ALL OF THEM. SOMETIMES IT IS THE LITTLE THINGS THAT HIDE FROM YOU AND WRECK HAVOC IN YOUR HANDLOADING.

I THINK YOU ARE CORRECT IN ASSUMING THAT NONE OF THE FACTORYS WILL GIVE YOU LOADING INFO. I HOPE THIS HELPS. BILL

Sounds like the gun wants to shoot!!

Try running the Hornady bullets just touching or into the lands. I have found this to work very well for the hornady bullets!! Others like Scenars,Smk's,Bergers, and noslers like a bit of a jump. Some as much as .020'

As far as powder, Varget has been the winner for me. With the 150's try starting around 44 grs. and withe 168's start around 42 gr. Remember every gun is different. Remember velocity isn't everything, you can always dial up for the range!!!

Hope this helps!!!

What primer are you using?

I have had a couple of guns that would not shoot, changed to a different primer and the groups closed right up.

Hammerhead

Stock Savage barrels are short throated. Load the Barns to mag length 2.80-2.83 .. Try the A-max with a light jam into the lands. 4895 is a good powder for the 168's thru the 180 class . I would recommend a faster burning powder for the 150 grn class.,R.E.-15 / Benchmark)

168 A-max, COAL 2.8? light jam, 43 grns IMR-4895. That should get you real close to a sweet spot. Experament .5 grn either side of that load and you'll find it.

im using remingotn 9 1/2 primers, and win brass. ill have to try some of these loads and get back to ya. thanks guys, brian.
