.308 hornady 150 grn sst interlock

hey guys, i just re-stocked and bedded my savage 110, in .308. i have a savage take off 24" .308 medium conture barrel, and a new .250" parralel recoil lug installed.

i started shooting today with some rem factory MC bullets, and can i say, was impressed with the accuracy. about 1" 5 shoot groups. not bad, since i was shooting off of a folding card table. anyways, i started some loads with hornady 150 sst interlocks, propelled by 45 grns H4895, and 45 grns varget. both shot 1" 5 shoot groups, at 100 yards. okay, but i expected more.

what do you guys think about the hornady sst interlock bullets, and varget. is this a good combo?,for accuracy, and hopefully hunting one day) would h4895 do better? i was going to start loading up some more loads, and see if i can shrink my groups. just looking for some info if anyone has used these bullets or powder.

thanks guys, brian.

The Hornady bullet is a good bullet. It is accurate and does a good job on game. About the only difference that I see in the powders is Varget is not temperature sensitive. You get about the same pressure and velocity when it is cold or when it is hot. Yes you must play with your loads to get accuracy. Do a ladder test with the powder and use different primers once you find your powder load and then play with seating length. Change only one thing at a time though. I would start with case prep. All same make, de-burr the inside of the case flash hole, this is one thing that has added the most accuracy to my loads. Square your primer pockets and make sure your cases are all trimmed to the same length. You did not say if your barrel was free floated or not. I would do this if it is not. If it is try some pressure under the barrel at the forearm tip some rifles like this. GET A SOLID SHOOTING TABLE. You can't shoot good groups off a card table even with a bench rest rifle. If you want a flat shooting deer killing load try you some 125 gr. Nosler Ballistic Tips. I push them with 46 grs. IMR 4895 to a touch over 3000 fps from my 21 1/2 inch tube. You put one of these into the front shoulder of a deer and it is bang flop. I have killed somewhere over 25 deer with this bullet since my hunting buddy discovered how well it kills deer when he was trying to find a low recoil load for his girl friend to use. I have never had a deer take a single step after it was hit. All one shot kills out to a little over 300 yards. Good luck.
