Need Wolf Primers

I bought 5000 from Powder Valley and all my 6BR reloads have been 'very' consistent with the ones I used to date and I'm sure they're a late lot #.
Shouldn't have any worries with them.

For $25.50/100, No wonder they have them in stock, and they can keep them!

Curious as to why you are only looking for primers from 2008 or earlier. Would those be nickel plated vs the current copper looking ones? Also, are you looking for the standard SR primer or the thicker SRM? I have had good results with the SRM's I bought 2 or 3 years ago, bought some more from Powder Valley recently @ $25.50/ 1000 and they are the copper looking ones. Wondering if they have changed anything besides appearance. Curious minds want to know. Thanks

I've used the SR (copper colored), SRM (nickel), and purchased but haven't tried the ones specified for .223 AR loading (brass colored). All have been very consistent, on par with any other small rifle primers I've tried. I did finally blank one of the SR sandard copper colored primers with a stiff PPC load, so it may be prudent to use these for lower pressure loads, though they shoot just as well as any.

Wolf now offers three varieties of small rifle primers, KVB-223, KVB-223M and KVB-5.56M. I believe that the KVB-5.56M is the same as the older Wolf SRM except nickle plating. I purchased 10k earlier this year and have obtained excellent results. Several 6BR loads using RL17 exhibit single-digit ES and fine accuracy. My .223 loads are in low double digit ES, around 12-20 fps. These loads are very stiff and the primers tolerated pressure well.

The KVB-7 LR has also performed. Yesterday, in 80°, windy spring weather, I shot ~1.5" five-shot, 300 yard .308 Win groups using 44.0 8208 and Sierra moly 190 MK. The ES/SD was 7.1/2.9 and 16.4/7.0 for the two groups I shot over the chrono at 100 yards.

*** Amendment - the above is incorrect, the bullet was Lapua Scenar 155 moly. My 190 MK load was 47.0 RL17. The ES/SD numbers are correct for the 155 load. I regret any confusion. 44 grains 8208 is a very unsafe load with 190 MKs in .308. Sorry. ***

So, it does not seem to me that anything has degraded from the Russians I have used previously.

Thanks for the info Steve. I had been wanting some of the std SR Wolf primers to use in my Hornets & Bees. Like Mark is doing here, I had tried finding some through BRC, since some of the BR shooters got the std SR primers by mistake early on & had trouble blanking primers in PPC loads, but no luck. I just bought quite a few of all 3 of the current SR primers, plus a sleeve of shotgun primers from Powder Valley. 1st outing with the std SR primers was not encouraging, with a number of FTF. I think I may have seated them too hard & cracked the pellet. I looked at the new primers vs the nickel plated SRM from earlier years, and it appears that the anvil may be seated deeper into the cup on the newer ones, so you don't seat them the same way as the older ones (firm, then hard)? Loaded up a few more last night to test with the primers just seated to touch firmly. We'll see how that works out. Anybody that can contribute more knowledge or experience with the Wolf primers, please do so.

Joe I'm using the SR, SRM and LRM Wolfs. Before the "Great primer shortage" I used mostly all Federal Match. The Wolf primers have worked very well in all my guns from BR to hunting and Varmint.

On the forums I've heard of a few people having FTF's with them. I have yet to experience this. They shoot as small or smaller groups than I ever got with Federal Matches. All my MV data is so close it's within the SD range of my Federal data. I'm sold on them Federal has lost a customer they cost 2/3's or less what the competition is and are readily available.

If our moderator is reading this thread, it needs to be moved to the reloading catagory.

Got out to the range yesterday to shoot a little. I fired the 10 rounds of 218 Bee that I had test loaded with the Wolf std SR primers (current batch, copper colored). They all fired & chrono data was about the same as the others I had loaded with WSR primers. These were all seated with the same feel - seated firmly, no crush. I am convinced that successful use of the Wolf primers is dependant on learning how to properly seat them, and the required technique seems to be different for the different versions, sizes and batches. I think there is still a lot to learn & share about this topic, thus my reason for spending so much time on this thread. Just like Johnny, all of you who have responded & myself, many of us have started using the Wolf products because they are available & at a relatively attractive price. After using them, we have almost unanimously found them to be a top tier product, so learning the variables of the different primers is worth keeping this thread going IMO.
